FORTY-FOUR

REBECCA

“Here.” Gian showedme his iPad. Kissing my shoulder, he said, “You win, my queen.”

He’d hacked into a security feed at JFK where I watched his hitmen march through the international arrivals terminal.

My parents were out of danger. Maybe.

“Did they find Kato?” I asked, scrolling through all the photos and videos, marking them for deletion.

“No,” Gian said. “None of my guys have seen him. He might have taken off on your parents before my team got there.”

“Are you worried Kato will turn on your father?” Anthony asked me, taking off his suit jacket.

For the first time in months, I’d given Vale and Gil the weekend off. I had three ruthless princes in my townhouse. No one was getting near me. Except them.

“Messina, I think Vito would turn on your father before Kato went against Giovanni,” Sebastien said, handing me a glass of champagne.

I took the flute and smiled, ready to take a sip. A body paced on the sidewalk, the gait and familiar set of shoulders caught my attention.

Julian.

My heart raced, fearing Sebastien or Anthony would see him. If I’d known Julian Russo was a Fed, no doubt, they had known all along too.

“I’ll be right back.” I rushed to my door and closed it behind me.

Julian’s smile reached his eyes upon seeing me.

“Get behind that tree!” I pointed, looking back.

Frowning, he stepped behind the oak tree in front of my townhouse. When I got closer, I pushed him further, the wide base hopefully hiding him. At any moment, one of my men could come looking for me.

“I haven’t told anyone it was you who came to me.” I looked down at my hand pressing into his firm chest of pure muscle.

“I see.” He nodded, then stared at me, our eyes connecting. “I appreciate that. But I don’t need you to protect me. Mob thugs are no match for the FBI.”

I folded my arms, breaking the intense penetration of his blue eyes into my soul. “Am I a mob thug?”

“According to my field office, you are the CEO of Domenico Holdings. And you found a contract of your father’s to buy drugs and killed the deal.”

“So you heard?”

“We heard.” He leaned on the tree, his head lazily resting against the bark. Rumpled chestnut hair and dark circles under his eyes made him even more handsome. “My team figured out who manufactured the drug. Found your contract. And the termination request.”

I checked my watch. “With a week or so to spare. I keep my word.”

“You’re a rare gem in a very dirty business.” His words cut through me. “I believe the underground crime world will be a little less filthy with you in charge.”

“Thank you.”

“My work continues.” He exhaled. “They sold the drugs to a buyer in Europe. Interpol is on it. They’re intercepting the shipment.”

I shuddered. “Sebastien has several court dates at the Hauge with them. We were hoping no one would else would touch the drugs.”

“They sold it for pennies on the dollar on the black-market. The low cost made the new buyers easy to find. Their cheap operation didn’t have the same security system as a more sophisticated buyer.”

Like us...

“Are you sad you didn’t get to do the bust?”

“I’m still involved.” He straightened to his full height. “I’m on a flight tonight.”

“To where?”

“That’s classified, Miss Domenico.”

“Touché. And you promise once it’s in Interpol or FBI custody, the drugs won’t be smuggled somewhere else?”

“You can count on me.”

“And I expect you to come to me if you ever come across something so despicable again.” I reached out for him, my pulse racing when he took my hand. “Don’t be too much of a stranger.”

“I’m proud of you.” Inspecting my fingers, he said, “No ring? You and Anthony Messina Jr. aren’t engaged?”

I sucked in a breath. “You knew my father promised me to him?”

“I knew everything your father was doing, Rebecca.”

“No, not marrying Anthony Messina.” It wasn’t a lie. I wasn’t marrying any of the three because I couldn’t. We were still exploring this delicious debauchery we were addicted to. Taking it all one hot, salacious night at a time.

If I could marry them, I would make that vow. I loved them and they loved me.

“Your father’s not doing well, Rebecca.” Julian looked down at his feet.

My throat swelled. “What makes you say that?”

“We picked up Kato in Puerto Rico.”
