“It’s just that, I’ve never met a guy my age like you. The way you speak, carry yourself, look out for me. All of it. And… like you said… we’ve experienced things that will bond us for life. I don’t know. I guess I wanted to do something else that would bond us for life, too.”

His smile was crooked as he finally realized what she was getting at.

“Are you a virgin, Lavender?”

“Yes,” she answered just above a whisper. “Are you?”

He nodded. “If Rodney wasn’t here already, I wouldn’t mind giving it to you.”

Lavender nodded, putting space between them. “Be careful, okay?”

“You too. Grace is great. She’s going to take care of you.”

“Thanks, Choyce. I know I keep saying that, but it never seems like enough.”

She grabbed the bag he’d brought for her and began to fill it with the small collection of things she used throughout the day. The longer he watched, the more difficult it was for Choyce to accept being able to send her away.

Not like this.

Not right now.

Pulling his phone out, he called Rodney, who answered after the first ring with, “Everything good?”

“Yeah.” Lavender made her way onto his chest. “Can we push the time back for a couple of hours? I’ll bring her to you.”

“That’s cool. Sondra tripping about not getting enough sleep anyway.”

“Give me about three hours and I’ll call you around eight.”

“Aight, cool.”

After disconnecting the call, Choyce said, “I’m going to get us a room for a few hours before you go. You cool with that?”

Her answer was pulling him down to her lips again. Choyce wasn’t sure how things were going to play out when they went to the hotel or after. And he honestly didn’t care. Right now, he needed more time with Lavender. More Lavender—period. He just prayed after they gifted each other their virginities that it would be easier to walk away.
