Then things had changed. She told me she used to feel like she was doing exactly what her mother and so many other people used to say was all she was ever going to do and that she really was stuck. Then she met me. Together, she didn’t feel stuck. She felt like she had a life.

And that life went beyond just the house we were so proud to buy. She’d passed her surveyor test with flying colors and had been steadily climbing the ranks in the logging company until her pregnancy got to a stage where she couldn’t safely work out at the sites anymore and was forced to stay in the office. I knew she was already torn between looking forward to the baby being born and spending all her time with both her children and getting back to the job she loved and was also immensely proud of.

We knew she was going to work. That wasn’t even a question. As much as she adored Olly and as much as she was excited to cuddle the new baby in her arms, she loved what she did and couldn’t wait to take on the official role of surveyor once she got back from maternity leave. Deana was already geared up and ready to add taking care of our daughter to her time with Olly.

I couldn’t wait until the day finally came for me to meet my baby girl. It was just a couple of weeks away, and I was happy we’d be in the new house and settled by the time she got here. I wanted her to come home to something beautiful and ready for her.

I looked down at Wendy’s belly and ran my hand across it lovingly. We were naming our daughter Hope. Together, that was what we had found. Wendy had managed to beat the cycle of her family and find peace and happiness. And I’d completely cut off my family, finding my own peace and happiness.

We were our own family now, the two of us and our children, Deana, and the big group of mountain men and their families. The group was just getting bigger, a sprawling family that we all just kept adding to. It was exactly the way we wanted it, and I couldn’t wait to see what the future was going to bring.

I leaned down and kissed Wendy. As long as I had her by my side, I was ready to face anything.
