This can’t be happening. This can’t—

“Sign,” he commands, handing me a clipboard.

I reach my shaky hands forward, signing my name on the dotted line before he tells me to get changed.

I wait a beat before stripping off the rough fabric of the prison uniform and slip on my shorts and Evan’s t-shirt. His scent wraps around me, causing butterflies to swarm and peace to wash over me. It smells like home.

Slipping my feet into my Chucks and grabbing my belongings, I wait for the officer before he leads me out of the room and down another hallway before opening a gate and then a door and saying, “You’re free.”

I frown, looking out of the door that he holds open, the sun blinding me for a beat before I take a step out.

I turn back to him as the door slams shut, about to ask if this is a mistake.

What the hell is going on?

I turn around, walking toward the metal fence as it opens enough for me to slip through.

Leaning my head back, I breathe deeply, taking in the fresh air and allowing the sunrays to soak into my skin. I’m free.

“Do you come here often?”

My eyes snap open as the voice whispers along my skin, causing goose bumps to spread before I spin around, my eyes connecting with his honey ones.

“Evan,” I choke out.

“Hey, baby.” He grins, stepping forward and opening his arms. I don’t hesitate, I take the four steps that separate us and jump into his arms, wrapping my legs around him and burying my face in his neck.

“Shhh.” His hand rubs up and down my back in soothing motions as he buries his head in my hair. “It’s okay.”

The tears flow freely down my face as I pull back, slamming my lips down onto his. “You kept your promise,” I whisper once I’ve pulled back.

“I always keep my promises.” His grin spreads wider as he lets me down, his hands going to my hips before his eyes widen and he looks down. “Oh, fuck.”

I bite my lip as both of his big hands pull up his t-shirt I’m wearing to expose the small bump I’ve developed. He flicks his gaze back up to mine, the amazement shining bright before he crouches down and places his lips there.

“I can’t believe—”

“I know,” I say, pushing my hand through his hair before letting it wander down his face. “I can feel it.”

“You can?” His voice is full of awe and I can’t help the tear that slips free as I nod.

“It’s like butterflies right now, but soon it’ll be proper kicks,” I explain. When I first felt movement a week ago, I wasn’t sure what it was, but then it happened again.

He stares at my swollen stomach for another beat before slowly standing up and wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me back to him.

He places his lips onto mine, slowly, taking his time as his tongue explores my mouth properly for the first time in what feels like forever. It’s been seven weeks since I’ve felt his hands on me, felt his lips on mine, and I’m soaking in every second.

A slow tingle starts to spread so I push closer, needing to feel him all around me. “I need you,” I whisper.

“Fuck,” he groans, pulling away and taking my hand. “I booked a hotel.” He winks when he gets to his car and pulls open the door.

I chuckle, shaking my head and slide inside, relishing the smell of his car that is uniquely Evan.

When I woke up this morning, I never thought I’d be sitting here with him by my side and my whole life ready to live in front of me without those walls surrounding me. He’d promised to get me out and he stuck to it.

I lean over to him when he slides in, letting my hands frame his face as I stare at him. “I missed you so much,” I choke out.

His chest rises and falls as he places his hand on my cheek, wiping away another tear. “I missed you, too, baby.”
