Jax and Nico continue chattering about the union and finding Shane’s current address. Then, Jax holds up my phone. “We could see if he’ll show us his hand. At least a peek.”

This is a nightmare and all I want to do is wake up. I also know, without a shadow of a doubt, it’s going to get far worse before I do. “What are you suggesting?”

“Reply and see if he gives us any clues.”

“He already knows where Dash works. He has my number. What more do we need?”

“He wants to play games, Arden. I think the best way to get this over with is to play along and play dumb.”

Like I have a choice. I hold out my hand, wiggling my fingers, so he’ll return my phone. If we’re doing this… Why am I doing this?

Me: What are you talking about?

Unknown: Don’t play stupid. How long do you really think he’ll put up with you?

“Do we really need to do this?” Dash asks. I’m sure he’s watching the conversation play out over my shoulder.

Me: Stop fucking around. You want something, just say it.

Unknown: You, Arden. I want you. And I want to meet my son.

Dash paces in front of me while I read off the exchange. My heart sinks with every word I read aloud.

Dash stops and rubs his hand over his beard. “You don’t need to do this, Ari.”

“I just want it to end. If this is what it takes…” I close my eyes, trying to gather my strength. I’m tired of being scared. “I don’t know what to tell him.”

I know what I want to say, but I don’t think that will help us find him any faster.

A debate erupts around me, mainly Dash debating Jax and Nico, and before they can agree on a response. My phone buzzes again.

Unknown: Don’t worry, baby. I’ll take care of everything.
