HIM

Ripping the car door open, I slipped into the passenger seat before slamming the door shut behind me.

“The plan is fucked.”

I glared at the guy who was sitting in the driver’s seat. “Really? I didn’t notice. Why the hell do you think I’m here instead of getting ready for the ceremony, Thomas?”

His grip on the steering wheel tightened. “This is the last night we can do it—”

“I know,” I snapped. “It’ll still happen. We’re working on it.”

“It was supposed to happen at the lake. Them leaving that campground messed everything up.” Thomas stated what I already knew. It had been a hellish morning of scrambling to change everything.

“You want to go against what the elders ordered and pull the plan?” I asked, already knowing what his answer would be. “I already tried calling it off until next year. They said no. It’s happening.”

Thomas’s face paled. “If that’s what they want, we’ll do it.”

I thought it was a fucking mistake. We’d changed courses too many times. It was a sign that this shouldn’t happen. But it wasn’t up to me. If they wanted to continue with it, then I’d do whatever they asked.

“After dark,” I murmured, staring straight ahead. “We’ll wait until the sisters are separated, and then we’ll begin.”

“What if they don’t leave each other—”

“They will,” I cut him off. “Everyone better be where they’re supposed to be when it starts. We don’t have any cell service up here.”

He nodded. “They know what to do.”

“Good.”

Closing my eyes for a moment, I took a deep breath. It had already been a long day, and it was only the beginning. I was ready for the night to be done. Usually, everything went off without a hitch. But this time was different.

In every damn way possible.
