His eyes flew open at Adelaine’s voice. He scrambled to his feet as the guard opened the cell and shoved Adelaine in. He opened his arms as she stumbled and fell right on his chest. The iron door slammed. “Have a happy night, Scot, with the woman who loves you. I’d advise you to take all the time you can, as both of you traitors will be executed in two days.”

Disbelief surged inside him with dread following swiftly on its heels. Adelaine stuck her head under his chin as the man laughed scornfully at them and left.

“Adelaine,” he said quietly. “What did he mean by that? How are ye a traitor?”

She laughed dourly, “It seems that anyone who has any pity or god forbid, love, for a Scot is a traitor to my father. I found some letters, Caelan, letters from my father, ordering a blackguard to kill Peter.”

Taking her back to his corner, Caelan sat and pulled her on his lap. “What?”

Resting her head on his shoulder Adelaine told him everything, from the moment she had met Islington to the day she had seen the dug-up section between the roots of the old tree stump. She told him how she had dismissed it as the home of a mole, but when she had taken another ride, how curiosity had come over her and she had found them.

“They were in a sack, Caelan,” she explained. “I don’t think I have them all though. Knowing my father, he must have told the man when and where to kill Peter, to the smallest detail, and I have not found that letter.”

She lifted her head to him, “Peter had married a Scottish woman, Caelan, without my father knowing. That was the reason he had killed him.”

“What a bastard,” Caelan muttered.

Adeline shifted on his lap, settling herself directly on his manhood. But this was no time for desire, and he would slay himself before he ever took her there, on the ground like a whore. Wordlessly, he gathered her in his arms and shifted her so she was still sitting on his lap but away from his already-thickening length.

His eyes held hers, and the sadness in them had him mourning for her in his heart. She had lost her brother, and now her father. He had never heard her speak of her mother so he could only assume that she had lost her too. What could be worse than losing all those who you loved?

Using his hand, he cupped the back of her neck to tip Adelaine’s head back. Her hair, so thick and silky fell back, past her delicate shoulders and he gazed into her eyes. His thumb ran under her chin and felt the smoothness of her skin. She was looking up him in wonder, her eyes so wide, expressive and deep. God’s truth, no woman had captivated him as much as she had.

“Caelan—”

He kissed her, deeply, tenderly pouring out all his love and adoration for her. He slid his hand deep into her tresses as he swept his tongue around her sweet, lovely mouth. Her fingers, digging into his shoulder egged him on. He pulled away for a moment and nearly drowned in her liquid look. Smoothing her hair away, he kissed her again, before making a path of light kisses down her neck.

“Adelaine,” he whispered against her skin, “dae ye truly love me?”

“Without a doubt,” she sighed. “I was running away to come to you when Father found me.”

His head jerked up and he looked at her with wonder. “Mo ghaol, me love. I was going to come for ye anyhow.”

“I just had enough. Enough of the lies, enough of the deception and enough of the pain. I was coming to be yours,” Adelaine replied. “I realized that no one here would make me feel the same way. No one, Caelan, no one. I want to be yours, wholly.”

“Would ye have married me?” he asked.

“In words,” she replied quietly. “But I think I am already married to you in any other way.”

He kissed her again, a sweeping kiss that spoke of his joy. He tucked her head under his chin. “Ye are mine, always and forever.”

“Caelan…” Adelaine asked, feeling her heart begun to pound with her next words. “Is this truly our last time together? Shouldn’t we…”

He sighed, “Love, I’d be the happiest man in this world to lay with ye, to make ye feel the pleasures of a man and woman joining. I’d love to make ye feel your skin sing when I kiss ye all over, but I cannae do this here. Yer nay a whore to be taken on rough and cold stone.”

She understood his reasoning but her father had only allowed her one night with him. She did not know if there would be another. She had felt tastes of the pleasure he could give her but she did not want to just taste any more. If this was the only time they had left, she needed him give her all of it.

“Caelan, I need you to be with me,” she said while resting a hand on his chest and looking deep into his eyes to press her sincerity. “I don’t care if it is on a dungeon floor or a forest, the only thing that matters to me is you.”

She could see the hesitation in his eyes and knew she would have to initiate it, so she leaned in and kissed him, taking his hands and resting them on her breasts. He held back, she could feel him doing do but as he kissed her back, he brushed the pad of his thumb across her nipple. He could feel her nipple bead and get taut. He kissed her neck. “God, I want ye but nay here.”

“Then when?” She asked.

“Lass, please,” he said. “Dinnae make me dae it.”

Adelaine kissed him and shifted in his lap. She dug her hands into his hair and kissed him harder. Caelan’s hand dropped to her waist and she could feel his length begin to thicken.

He pulled her onto his chest and suddenly his kiss was consuming, demanding, and showed her that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. He met her tongue, kissing her with swirling, teasing, simmering kisses. His hands cupped her bottom and hoisted her up, sucking on her tongue with long, heady sucks.
