I walk over and stand behind her, looking down at the book. She gasps at the same moment I take in a sharp breath. The grimoire has copied the pages from the file into itself. Perfectly crisp, clean copies like a Xerox machine.

“Holy shit,” Rowan whispers.

“You can say that again.” I shake my head. “That’s not standard grimoire behavior. At least, none that I’ve ever heard of.”

From where I’m standing, peering over her shoulder, I’m inches from her soft curves. My hands want nothing more than to reach around and slide down her hips, yank her back. Feel her round little ass pressing against me, run my palms over those perfect breasts, kiss the slender column of her neck. I’d nearly gone out of my mind the day before, feeling her nipples respond to my touch, smelling the scent of her skin, of all the places ready and waiting for me…

Footsteps in the hall again, and this time they don’t stop at the bathroom. Rowan spins and grabs me, and in the next moment we’re standing outside the building. I feel lightheaded, like I’ve ridden a rollercoaster.

“What did you…”

“My magic has a mind of its own,” she says. She sounds smug.

“That’s not a good thing,” I say, stepping back from her. “It’s dangerous.”

“Well, it saved our asses, so a little gratitude might be in order.”

I ignore her last comment. “I’m going to need to look at those files.”

She laughs. “You’re not taking my grimoire.”

I think about this a moment. I could take it by force, not that I would—I do have honor, even with witches—but even if I did, grimoires aren’t known for cooperating with anyone but their chosen witch.

“You do realize you’re in over your head, right?” She’s beyond maddening, and stubborn, and too smart for her own good. Full of rogue magic and brave as hell, which is either a great combination or a terrible one. I let out a frustrated groan. “Stay out of this, Rowan. You have no idea what you’re up against.”

“I met the horned beast, same as you.” She has her arms crossed over her chest again, chin jutted out stubbornly. “And if you think I’m going to just sit and wait to be killed, not to mention letting my aunt’s murderer off the hook, you’re dumber than you look.”

She’s gone from sweet and innocent to madder than a rattlesnake, with the bite to match. I feel a wash of heat in my veins that feels like lightning. My dragon is barely within my control. This witch summons it like no one has before. No one in my whole life.

I’ve got to get out of here. Away from her.

“Well, when you end up dead, don’t say I didn’t warn you,” I say coldly.

Then I spin and head into the woods before I can hear her reply.
