“Yeah, I forgot for a second. I guess I need caffeine.”

She crawls off the bed on my side. “A demon who enjoys coffee?” Her head tilts to the side. “I could use some, too. And food.”

“I’m half human, remember?” I smirk and glamour some clothes onto my body, a pair of canvas shorts and a black tank top, along with leather flip-flops.

Ven walks to the dresser and changes clothes the old-fashioned way; another knee-length sundress, this one a pale jade green. She puts on a silver necklace with a crystal and moon pendant and runs a brush through her curls. I turn around, even though she didn’t ask me to this time.

“There’s a café on the beach not too far from here,” she says. “Then we can visit the high priestess of the local coven and see if she can help us with this spell.”

The sky lightens to a pale gray-purple as we leave Ven’s house. By the time we reach the café fifteen minutes later, the waves are streaked tangerine by the rising sun. It’s probably only 6:30, but the café is already open for the breakfast crowd. Certainly not the clubbers we saw last night, who are all sleeping it off right about now.

We get a table on the deck overlooking the ocean, sitting next to each other so the magical barrier doesn’t zap us. Soon after, we each have a steaming mug of café con leche. Ven orders a plate of fruit and whole-grain toast, and I get a breakfast burrito. After setting down our food, the waitress stops and stares at me, enraptured. I’m not even trying to project my usual lust vibes, but a bit of it happens naturally.

I look up, questioningly, so she realizes what she’s doing.

“D-do you need anything else?” she stammers.

“I’ve got everything I need right here,” I say with a smile.

She blushes at the smile, even though it has no magical push in it, and scurries away quickly.

Ven chuckles. “Poor girl. You really should try to contain yourself.”

I elbow her. “I am containing myself, as a matter of fact. I can’t help it if a bit of residual power just kind of flows out of me.”

“Wait—are you suppressing your magic on account of me?” She raises her brows and takes a bite of mango.

It’s an effort not to stare at her pink lips as she eats. “Yes. Consider it a courtesy. You’ve made it clear you don’t appreciate my natural talents.” I take a sip of my coffee. “Plus, if I had my normal levels of power pinging around inside this magical forcefield you’ve created, you’d have ripped my clothes off by now. And then we’d never find your missing witch friend.”

“Um, excuse me?” Ven straightens and turns to look at me. “You’re saying that I wouldn’t be able to resist your magic? I think I’ve proven already that I can. Easily.”

“That was before. When we weren’t trapped inside this orb together.” I cross my arms over my chest and shoot her a challenging look. I need to remind her what I am. Before this goes any further.

She mirrors my cocky posture. “Fine, then. Show me what you’ve got, demon.”
