Tamsin looks beyond me. “I can leave the beds here, and we’ll go together.”

“No.” I shake my head firmly. “I came here to rescue Luciana, and I’ve helped do that. Get her the rest of the way to safety. I’ll follow you soon.”

“You’d better,” she says. “I’ll tell you everything you want to know about my magic. And I think I owe you dinner after this. For a year.”

“Deal,” I say, echoing her words from moments before. I jerk my head toward the distant beach. “You know about the guards at the bottom?”

She nods.

“I think you can take them with that spear thing.”

Tamsin hooks me with her mountain gray eyes. “You’re a good friend and a good witch, Ven. I’ll see you soon.”

I nod and raise a hand in farewell. Then I turn to face the fortress before me.

I break into a run until I get to the intersection, and then I turn right. It’s the last hallway. It has to be where Ryder is, if he’s still alive. Similar to the other hallway, there is only one door, and it’s at the very end. When I reach it, I take a deep breath. I don’t know what’s on the other side. I also don’t know how one witch is going to save the man she’s falling for and take down an evil empire all by herself. But I’m done running away from fear.

I turn the handle and step through the door.
