Chapter Twenty

Blake

Tamsin stares at the phone in my hand. “Asshole!”

“Excuse me?” I growl.

“Not you, John!” She snatches the phone out of my hand. “Although also you for reading my text messages. That’s a major invasion of privacy!”

My mouth falls open. “Are you serious? You’re keeping a secret boyfriend after we slept together and I’m the one who’s out of line?”

“I told you before, John is not my boyfriend,” Tamsin snarls. “And how can you think that I would do that? You have major trust issues, Blake. Like, really.”

“Then why is this guy sending you messages about your new townhouse overlooking the Hudson?”

“Because he’s an overconfident player who can’t take no for an answer!” Tamsin paces back and forth behind the kitchen island. “We haven’t been a couple for years, and out of the blue he’s been coming on super strong lately. I told him we’re not getting together again.” She stops her pacing and stares at me. “Are you going to apologize?”

I open and close my mouth several times. I’m used to bossy women, but Tamsin takes the cake. “I didn’t mean to look at your phone! The screen lit up and showed the text.”

“And?” She crosses her arms over her chest.

Imagining her with someone else drives me absolutely insane. Especially now that we’ve joined together again. My wolf has claimed its mate, and I’ll rip the head off anyone who so much as looks funny in her direction. “I’m not apologizing for asking a logical question. I have a right to know if you’re seeing other men.”

“You have no such right!” Tamsin snaps. “I’ve promised you nothing. Even if I was sleeping with John, that would be none of your business.”

“None of my business?” I can feel the muscles in my neck straining, and heat rushes through my body. “So, you’re going to carry on with as many men as you want, and I don’t have a say in the matter?”

Tamsin throws her hands in the air. “This possessive macho shit may work with local women, but if you think that’s going to work with me, you have another thing coming.”

Her voice has gone deeply brogue, which it always does when she loses control of her emotions. I’m absolutely furious, but at the same time, I want to bend her over the countertop and rip her clothes off her body.

“Local women? You don’t consider yourself from around here anymore?” I glare at her. “Do you realize how condescending that sounds?”

“If I’m so condescending, then why do you even want to be with me?” she growls. “I’ve changed. So have you. I am not the wide-eyed girl you knew before, and if you don’t like the woman I’ve become, that’s fine. You don’t have to.”

“And if you have a problem with me wanting my women to be with me only, which is the same courtesy I offer them, by the way, then we are definitely not compatible.” I take a step closer to her, heat and magic flaring off my body.

“You’re missing the point, Blake,” Tamsin snarls. “I’m not your woman. Just because we fucked doesn’t mean I’m beholden to you. I’m not saying I want multiple partners. I’m just saying if a woman hasn’t committed to a man, she can if she wants to.”

“Just because we fucked?” I’m so mad my head could explode. “So, that’s all I am to you? A cheap screw?”

Her eyes flicker with some emotion I can’t read. “I’ve been very clear with you all along that I don’t plan to stay. My life isn’t here anymore. Have you not been listening to a thing I’ve said?”

I take another step toward her, until we’re standing chest to chest. “Look me in the eyes and tell me I don’t mean anything to you. That you can walk away with no regrets.”

She meets my gaze, her gray eyes blazing with anger and sparking with green magic again. I know mine burn with the same fire. “My life is filled with regret. It’s nothing new.”

My jaw flexes. “That’s not an answer to my question.”

Tamsin lifts her chin. “This was only ever temporary, Blake. I hope that this time, you can truly hear me.”

And she turns and strides out of the kitchen into the bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
