“All for money,” I say, my words raspy from trying to catch my breath. “What use do you have for it, anyways, a being such as yourself?”

Darkness crosses her slim arms over her chest and drums her glossy black nails on one arm. “I said lucrative, my dear, but I didn’t say money. If I infect only a few choice citizens with enough money to pay for the cure, that has limited returns. But if I infect a large portion of the population in each country around the world and then limit the amount of the cure available… well now, imagine the competition between governments, the instability, the utter chaos and despair that would sweep the globe.”

Her melted penny gaze latches onto mine and a wave of absolute dread sweeps over me.

“How could you?” I whisper.

She shrugs. “I’m Darkness, darling. It’s what I do.”

She takes a step toward me, and I widen my stance, blocking Luciana. “You’re not taking my sister again.”

“Quite right,” Darkness says. “So long as you come with me willingly. I care nothing for your sister. You’re the one I want, Tamsin.”

I hesitate for only the barest of moments, and then I nod. I just need to get this thing away from my sister.

It’s at that moment that Blake appears in the doorway. He takes in the scene before him, and his magic flares out as he lets out a growl. Darkness sweeps her shadows around me, pulling me up against her body.

“Take care of Luciana,” I gasp.

“No!” Blake yells, lunging for me.

Darkness laughs and we vanish in a swirl of black stars.
