Devon goes still. “Oh, in Heaven we know her well. She is an enemy of the light. It is said even Lucifer steers clear of her.”

My jaw clenches. “I’m taking you back to MacPherson House, Luciana,” I say. “And then I need to rally the troops.”

“I’ll help,” Devon says, his eyes flashing.

“Are you sure?” I shake my head. “This is going to be bloody business before the end.”

“You’re a good friend, Blake,” Devon says. “And Tamsin means a lot to you. It’s not even a question.”

I nod and place my hand on his shoulder. “Okay, then. I’m going to need all the help I can get.”

“What’s your plan?”

“I’m going to track Tamsin, and I’m going to take her back from that evil hag.” My magic blazes around me. “Darkness will follow us, of course, but when she does, she’ll find the full power of the Highlands clans waiting for her.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Luciana shiver, and her eyes widen in fear.

“What is it?” I ask.

“Aengus,” she says, and the look on her face tells me I’ve been betrayed.

Another surge of rage moves through my body. Even with his bitterness over Tamsin and his play for power the other day in the clan meeting, this surprises me. I’d known he was pissed, but teaming up with Darkness? That’s extreme, even for him. Extreme, and beyond dishonorable.

Devon reaches out and places a hand on my shoulder, and the magic I hadn’t realized was pulsating off of me subsides.

“We’ll get Tamsin back,” the angel says.

I nod, a stiff jerk of my chin, and cast my gaze to Luciana. “We couldn’t risk a transportation spell before you were healed, but I think you’re up for it now.”

She slides her legs off the table and Devon helps her stand. She wobbles slightly but holds herself upright. I hook one arm under her elbow and call my magic.

“And I trust you can make your way to MacPherson House?” I ask Devon. He’d been to my house a number of times over the years, so he knows the area well.

He smiles, and a pair of blindingly white wings flare out behind his back. “I’ll manage.”
