Erik doesn’t take his eyes off me as I stand on my tiptoes, snaking one hand around the back of his neck. My chest presses against his as I lean into him. I brush my lips over his, and a spark of magic moves between us, like two storm fronts converging. A shiver runs over him and his dragon rumbles again, a low growl deep inside.

But he doesn’t move. His arms are pinned to his sides, his body rigid. His lips hold no spark, he makes no move to reciprocate.

Oh, God. What am I doing?

I step back, heart pounding. “I—I’m so sorry, Erik. I have no idea what just came over me.”

He doesn’t move as I take another step back. He drops his gaze.

“Wow. I’m—that was so inappropriate.” I’m shaking now, and I wrap my arms around myself to fight the sudden goosebumps. “I think I’m—I’m just going to go to bed.”

I spin and rush for the stairs.

“Astrid, wait,” Erik calls when I’m halfway up.

But I don’t stop. I don’t wait to hear what he has to say. I don’t think I’ve ever been so mortified in my life, and I can’t get out of this room fast enough.

What the hell is wrong with me?
