“Both times we were attacked, I was distracted.” I shake my head. “Distracted by you.”

Astrid stiffens.

“I can’t let myself lose focus again.” I put some steel in my voice. “I’m here to protect you, and I can’t do that if things continue like this. We need to keep things strictly professional from here on out.”

She’s silent a moment, and then she nods. “I get it. It makes sense.”

Her expression closes and her posture changes, as if she’s pulling a cloak around herself. Putting up walls between us. The feeling of her withdrawal makes the cavern even more frigid than it already is.
