But even the runes can’t distract me for long. I can still feel the energy of the dragon shifter on my doorstep, so strongly I can almost see it, like a glowing torch through the wall. A peek out the window shows that the snowfall has turned into pretty much a blizzard. It must have piled up two feet since I slammed the door in his face a couple of hours ago. I glance at my phone and see several weather warnings scroll across the screen. There’s an all-out ice storm headed this way.

Damn it.

I get up and begin to pace across my office. If this guy hasn’t left by now, that means he plans to stay. And if he’s staying through the storm tonight, that means he’s going to be here tomorrow. How exactly am I going to get rid of this guy?

An idea pops into my head. A not half bad idea.

I stride to the door, unlock it, and swing it open.

The burly bodyguard stands there staring at me, his face red from the cold, his whole body covered in a dusting of snow. His huge arms are crossed over his chest.

“There’s an ice storm coming,” I say.

He unclenches his frozen jaw and narrows his eyes. “So, you’re going to let me in?”

“Yes.” I nod. “I’ll let you in.”

His eyes widen in surprise.

I smile. “I’ll let you in if you can beat me in a magical duel.”
