Luciana just smiles more brightly, not in the least bit fazed. I can see her filing away all these bits of information in her head. I’m still not sure what exactly she has planned. Is she just gathering information on the demons here, or is there something more elaborate in the works?

Earlier, when she’d said I was addicted to her… is she right? I already know I’m addicted to danger, so is that why I’m so drawn to Luciana? Because she works for my enemy and she’s plotting against me? It’s downright foolish to let her be my arm-candy at this thing, gleaning all sorts of information about the demons in the room, and the Night Guild. But for some reason I can’t bring myself to end it. I want to see how far she’ll go. How far I’ll go.

I also don’t feel a need to protect a single demon in this room. I could care less if they all get busted. A risky move; I know I’m playing with fire. Sometimes, though, the burn just hurts too good to take your hand out of the flames.

I abruptly realize we’ve made an appearance with each of our guests. The party is carrying on, but I’ve done my duty. Technically, since I own this place, I should stay until the very end. Make sure Caspian doesn’t do anything stupid before the end of the night. Ensure we’re in the best possible position in this deadly chess game before the summit starts tomorrow.

But for some reason, I just don’t care.

And that reason is standing beside me.

As we turn from the latest guest we’d been having empty conversation with, I take Luciana by the elbow and steer her to the back of the room. We slip through the door there into the hallway that runs to the back entrance of the winery.

“Where are we going?” Luciana asks.

“I’m done with pleasantries for the evening,” I respond.

She laughs. “Just like that? Aren’t you the host of this thing?”

I turn to her and grin. “Yes. Which means technically I can do whatever the hell I want to do.”

“Is that so?”

I shove open the exterior door and we step out into the chilly winter night. “Yes.” I tug Luciana forward into the vineyards beyond. “Follow me.”
