Chapter Twenty-Seven

Luciana

Sebastian and I get dressed in silence and walk to the front door of his house. He stops before he opens it, turning and pulling me against him, his tongue probing my mouth, both hot and sweet.

“You stay here out of sight until the raid,” he says. “You’re supposed to be dead.”

I shiver. An hour ago, I’d thought I was going to be dead. “Be careful, please. I told my friends that you’re on our side. But you’ve got to make it to midnight without anyone realizing what we’re up to.”

Sebastian squeezes me. “You may be a newbie demon, but I’ve been one my entire life. I’m not a nice guy, remember? I’ll be fine.”

“You’d better be. You’re still my prisoner, after all.” I look up at him. “I have plans for you.”

“You know,” he says with a sly smile, “I distinctly remember you getting very touchy about me claiming that you belonged to me, and me being your prisoner sounds like roughly the same thing.”

My chest flutters. “Hmm. You might have a point about that. We should argue about it later, after all of this is done.”

“That’s a date, then.” His pale eyes lock onto mine, and he kisses me one more time. “I’ll see you at the witching hour.”

He turns, opens the door, and strides out into the night.

I close it behind him then lean up against it, my heart racing. A lot has happened in the last few hours, a rollercoaster of emotions that hasn’t quite caught up with me yet. I can’t believe Sebastian has known almost the entire time that I’m with the Raven Society. What stopped him from killing me instantly?

The same reason, I suppose, that I’m choosing to trust him now. He could be going back to his demon friends and telling them about the impending raid so he can ambush my friends. I shouldn’t trust him for one second. But somehow, I do. When he’d been questioning me, I’d said it didn’t matter how I felt about a particular person.

Since when had hot sex turned into feelings?

And exactly what kind of feelings am I having?

I don’t know the answers to any of these questions, and I’m too keyed up right now to contemplate them. Against all odds, I’m now within striking distance of taking down the Night Guild. Getting the revenge I’ve so desperately wanted. Needed. I don’t know where my life is going to go from here. I’m not at all the same person I was before they abducted me. It feels like I’m starting all over.

Will Sebastian be part of that new life, or is the heat between us something fleeting that will pass?

With a sigh, I push myself off the door. Only time will tell. I just need to get through these next few hours.

I’m about to walk back down the hall when I hear footsteps outside the door. Sebastian? He must have forgotten to tell me something…perhaps his head space is as much a wreck as mine is…

The front door blasts inward and I duck as it flies over my head, crashing into one of the foyer walls beyond. A glowing pulse of pale blue magic blinds me and I throw my arm in front of my face to shield my eyes. I back away rapidly, blinking to try to regain my sight as the glow fades.

Violet stands there, a snarl on her pretty face.

“Luciana. Just the traitorous bitch I was looking for.”
