Witches and shifters pour in behind the lust demon, shooting spells. To my left, the windows on that side of the room bust inward and more supernaturals rush through, dozens and dozens of them.

I feel Aza summoning a wave of dark power, but before she can release it, I hit her in the back with the last of my own strength. Everything I have, pouring into her. She falls to her knees with a cry of pain. A black-haired witch materializes in front of me in a column of flame, followed a moment later by a dragon shifter with golden eyes. They wrap a pair of glowing magical cuffs around Aza’s wrists and ankles.

“I’m Rowan,” the witch says, straightening. “And this is Xander.” She points to the shifter. “You must be Sebastian.”

“Luciana told us you’d joined the team,” Xander says. “We started the raid a bit early after we felt the huge surge in demonic energy gathered here.”

I nod, opening my mouth to respond, but instead I fall to my knees as my wounds pulse with Aza’s black energy. I’m pouring blood, both muscle and bone showing through the gashes in my skin where she’d pinned me. Using the last of my magic to tackle Aza had taken literally everything I had left.

“Hold on!” I hear Rowan call, but it comes from far off, like she’s a mile away, not inches.

Magic pulses into me, and my fading consciousness returns. There’s a blonde witch standing over me, her palms outstretched. My wounds begin to close, and the dark magic washes away. I’ve never met her in my life, but she looks… familiar.

A moment later I straighten, staring down at my perfectly healed flesh which I can see through the burn marks in my suit. “Thanks,” I say breathlessly.

“I’m Tamsin,” the blonde witch says. “Luciana’s sister.”

“Luciana.” My eyes widen. “I think my brother has taken her.”

Tamsin’s face flashes with panic. “Where?”

“She’s already dead,” Aza calls from a few feet away, a smug smile on her lips. “Or very much wishing she was.”

Xander, who is standing closest to Aza, growls and steps down on her chest, crushing the air out of her. “Tell us where Luciana is.”

I don’t bother to listen for Aza’s reply, because I know she won’t reveal anything. It’s her last bit of leverage, her last bit of power in this world. And her revenge against me for switching sides. She’s not going to give it up.

But I know my brother. I know every corner of his sick and twisted mind after centuries of watching him in action. And I know exactly where he’s taken Luciana, because he knows it’s the place that holds my worst memories. A darkly poetic end meant to maximize my suffering.

The place where it all began.
