“If you’re going to destroy yourself,” he calls over the rushing wind, “I’m going with you.”

I watch as the red glow of my body passes over to him, and cracks of light form across his skin, and his pale eyes burn like the brightest moon.

And then I surrender.

My magic fades and I bury my face in Sebastian’s chest, listening to his heart beating. We’re alive.

There’s movement around us as members of the Raven Society rush past to cuff Caspian and Violet. I recognize Erik and Blake, and then my sister is standing at my side, crying and prying me away from Sebastian.

“You’re okay,” she gasps. “You’re alive.”

Caspian and Violet are carted out past us, both seeming dazed almost to the point of catatonic. The room suddenly becomes still as their footsteps fade away.

“Come on,” Tamsin says, wrapping her arm around me and tugging me away from Sebastian and toward the steps. “We need to get out of here.”

When we reach the base of the steps, my eyes go to Sebastian, who is standing in the center of the stone room by himself. His expression is tortured as his eyes travel around the space.

“Sebastian,” I call, but my voice is weak and it cracks.

“I’ll be right behind you,” he responds.

Tamsin leads me up the stone steps, and the pale of his eyes is the last thing I see before the staircase spirals around and out of sight.
