Chris picks me up and twirls me. “That’s my girl!” He smacks me on the lips, and when I look into his pride-filled eyes, it makes it worth having my stomach feel like it’s sloshing around inside me. “Do you know what you just did? I’ve seen marines tap out of this kind of course, and you nailed it!”

Skyla comes over and high-fives me. “That’s ’cause she freaking rocks, that’s why. You kicked ass. And with a hangover.” She looks around. “Where’s Tyler? He was just as big-mouthed last night, and he’s nowhere to be seen.”

We look around and can’t find him or Jared.

“Don’t tell me he fuckin’ died on the course,” Jensen grumbles.

“I’ll go look for them,” I volunteer.

At least then, if I vomit, no one will be witness to my humiliation.

I find Tyler and Jared face up in the mud pool. Both with mud spread all over their bodies and faces.

“Ty, what are you doing?”

He looks up, and if I’m not mistaken, it looks like he’s just waking up.

“Mud bath,” he says groggily.

“What? Why?”

“Do you know how much these cost?”

I stare at them with disbelief. “Oh my God, get out. People have probably puked in there.”

That did it. I’ve never seen two people complete a course so fast in my life.

By the time we get back to the group, I’m not feeling 100%, but I am feeling a whole lot better.

Everyone is sitting under the shade with a bucket full of cold beers. Chris takes one out of the ice and hands it to me. “Want one?”

My stomach roils. “No, thanks.”

Chris must see my color change because he stands and wraps an arm around me. “C’mon, angel. I think you deserve a soak in a tub.”

I look down at myself, covered in mud. “Shower first.”

“That would be a good idea.”
