I head to Trader Joe’s to grab the ingredients to make Jess’s favorite meal, lasagna. I want tonight to be perfect before I give her the bad news.
Pulling into our driveway, I get a text from her.
Angel: How’s your day going? Ready to scare the piss out of the new recruits?
Me: Actually, there’s been a change of plans. I’m cooking dinner instead.
Angel: That’s a great surprise!! (Followed by a million heart eye emojis). Heading over to Skyla’s mom’s to fetch Tatum and drop her off at Skyla’s office. She’s come down with a bug, and Mrs. Middleton has a migraine. See you in thirty.
Me: See you then, angel. Don’t text and drive.
A gif with a girl rolling her eyes appears on my screen, and I chuckle before sliding my phone into the shopping bag and opening the front door.
I take a shower, allowing the water to run over me and dispel the nerves from my upcoming mission. I don’t want to be distracted by anything tonight. I just want it to be about Jess and me.
After drying myself and getting changed into jeans and a Henley, I head to the kitchen to prepare dinner, hoping Jess will be so distracted by the food, she won’t be too upset about me leaving.
Yeah, I know it’s a big ask.
