Jensen steps forward. “Sure, anything.”

“Get me out of here? I need to just…”

He claps me on the shoulder, knowing what I need without me having to say the words. “I’m on it.”

I head to the exit and get in my car. I drive straight to the beach, understanding now why Skyla was heading in this direction when she decided to pull into the D.M. West Rehab Center. Sitting down, I watch the sea calmly ebbing and waning against the shore, the complete opposite of the turbulent emotions crashing inside me. I replay the last year-and-a-half of my life. The happiest time of my life. Jess was everything. She filled a hole in my life I didn’t know I had, and now I don’t know what I’m going to do without her.

My phone rings ten minutes later. “J?”

“The universe must be looking out for you. You deploy at 2100. There’s a team deploying to Somalia.”

Yeah, sure, the universe loves me. Jensen gives me the details and I stand, wiping the sand off my jeans and heading to my truck. I’ve got a few hours to get my shit together before I head out. This is exactly what I need. I won’t be able to think about shit when I’m in Somalia. At least, I hope that’s the case.
