Jess is fast asleep on my chest, and I’m about to nod off myself. This is by far the most content I’ve felt in a very long time. Years and years, in fact. Sleep starts to drag me under, but then I hear a ringing, and Jess shifts. She sits up and wraps the sheet around her body, her sheet-mussed hair tempting me to go for another round. I’m about to reach for her when I notice she’s handing me my phone. I take it and see Colonel Middleton’s name flash across the screen.

“I have to take this.”

“Of course. I’ll be in the bathroom.”

She walks into the bathroom, and I answer the phone. “Sir.”

“Lieutenant, I need you to meet us at the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton stat. They are bringing in Skyla, Jensen, and Trent.”

What the fuck?

I know better than to ask questions. Besides, the colonel has already hung up.

A minute later, Jess comes back into the bedroom. “Is everything okay?”

I scrub a hand over my face. “I’m not sure, but I need to go. I’m sorry.”

She waves a hand and smiles at me. “Of course.”

I don’t want her to think I’m ditching her. I stand and scoop her hair back over her shoulders and, settling my hands on her arms, bend down to kiss her lips. “You’re phenomenal. Do you know that?”

She beams. “You’re pretty amazing yourself.”

I don’t want to leave. I want to fall asleep with her in my arms and wake up and make her breakfast in the morning. “Can I have your number? I’d like to call you sometime.”

She holds her hand out for my phone. “You get dressed. I’ll add my number.”

Fuck me, how is it she’s so damn cool?
