Chapter Seven

Colton

A cold, wet nose hit my hand as I struggled out of a deep sleep. Moving my arm away and turning to pull the covers over my face, I wasn’t ready to greet the day just yet. Maverick, Lucy, and I stayed up way too late around the campfire drinking and laughing about old times last night. The sheets were snatched away by someone, and I tried to pull them back until I realized it was Rex getting irritated about not doing our regular morning routine. I sat up trying to force my eyes open only to see his long golden blonde hair and big puppy eyes staring back at me with the sheet’s corner in his mouth. Looking at the clock, I found it was 11 a.m. Defeated I announced, “Okay, you win. I’m up.”

He bounced out of the room, and I knew before my feet could hit the cold wood floor that he was getting his ball. Walking out to the front porch, the view which greeted me was much different than my home in Australia. Large trees surrounded my house except for the opening into the driveway, which was in a circle shape and led off to my detached garage. I loved everything about this place. All one could hear was wildlife and Rex for miles.

Picking up the ball, I threw it hard, and it disappeared into the forest. Rex ran after it and I sat down on the cabin steps. Sipping my extra strong black coffee before the sound of gravel crunching hit the driveway. Rex came running with the ball, and it went on repeat; me throwing it back into the woods and Rex bringing it back to me. My eyes fell upon a truck approaching through the opening. Standing up from the steps, I put my coffee aside and started moving toward the vehicle.

“That beer took you out last night,” Maverick smirked as we had an inside joke about the watered-down beer here in the U.S. He was built like a lumberjack and he was the most loyal person to me, aside from my brothers and possibly my dog.

“It’s my day off, so I figured I would sleep in.”

“As they say, bad shit always happens on your days off.” The pain took over as his statement was true beyond words in past experiences.

“What bad shit?” I asked as he got out of his truck.

“Well, it looks like you are famous.”

“That’s funny. Famous people are rich and the last time I checked my account, I was still broke.”

His deep laughter bounced off the trees as he handed me a newspaper. “The National Enquirer.”

I took the rolled newspaper from his hand unfolding it. “Yeah, it’s like a soap opera magazine for the United States.” Looking at the front of the page, I saw a familiar face was printed on it. MINE.

“Do you know her?” Maverick probed, wanting to confirm if it was true.

“No, but it looks like I made her pretty happy. Maybe this will give me a raise.”

He burst out again with laughter. “You would be the lucky bastard to get famous for pleasuring the youngest, hottest Billionaire in the US.”

“It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it.” My phone rang, and I pulled it out of the pockets of my blue jeans to answer it.

A male voice from the other end requested, “Mr. Shaw, the CEO of Boss Babe Incorporated, would like to meet with you in one hour. Can you make it?”

Not knowing the number or the person on the other line I blurted, “I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong number. I don’t know what Boss Babe Incorporated is. I canceled any subscription like that after hitting 30.”

Maverick busted up laughing, unable to keep his cool as he listened to the conversation. The voice on the other end barked. “Are you currently the janitor at Forever Fitness?”

I processed that a bit before replying, “Yeah, but what does that have to do with some Boss Babe?”

“Sir, you’re going to want to take this meeting. Be at our corporate headquarters conference room in one hour. I’m sure you will be able to find it. If not, remember the most embarrassing situation you had been in last week.”

Not liking this asshole’s tone, I paused for a moment before speaking. “You don’t know me very well. If you think I’m going to remember an embarrassing situation from last week, I have several of them a day, but I’ll be there at 3 p.m.” The phone hung up, and Maverick kept his eyes on me.

“This is not me, man. However, I got hit on and taken advantage of by this hot executive lady when cleaning the suites last week. She had been flirting with me for a few days and just showed up and jumped on me.”

“Hmmm… sounds awful,” Maverick sneered.

I carried on the joke, “I literally have to beat them off with a stick, man.”

“It’s the accent. Australian, Irish, and UK men always come over here and melt the panties off these American women.”

Looking at my watch, I found I still had the time to make it. It was a pretty long drive into the offices, so I called for Rex, put him inside, and made a beeline towards my car. Maverick turned to me and grabbed a baseball bat out of his truck. “Hey, if you need to borrow this to keep the women off, you just let me know.”

I chuckled, “No, I will call Lucy. She is terrifying.”

He rolled his eyes. “Yeah, tell me about it. I’m married to her.”

We both laughed before heading down the driveway. On my way in, I thought about what the meeting could be about. HR told me last week that the investigation was completed, and they had camera footage that proved I was not the instigator in the situation. My biggest fear was if they had found out the real reason I worked for the company and if I could face any legal backlash.
