“Oh, you’re my next competition? That will be at least ten apples.”

After a few hours, Brody and I pulled up to the house. Cole was standing on the porch like he had been waiting all morning. Running up to him, I grabbed his hands, pulling him toward the Jeep. Brody backed up a bit and put his hands in his pocket. “Dad’s outback with Mom,” he warned Brody.

Brody joked, “Still alive.”

Cole shrugged but stopped dead in his tracks when he noticed what was attached to the top of the Jeep.

I chimed in unable to hide my excitement anymore. “Surprise, I bought us matching boards. I figured with Brody almost killing me, you might want to teach me”.

Cole cupped his face and bent to his knees. Standing embarrassed, I shot a look to Brody, who stood still with his hands in his pockets. I bent down, “If you don’t like it, I can take it back.”

He stood up, and I noticed his eyes turning red like he was crying. I stammered forming the right words, “Oh my, Cole. I can take them back. I just thought you would like it.”

He turned away, walking right into the house. My voice trembled. I didn’t know why I felt so much pain seeing that in Cole’s eyes. I turned to Brody whispering softly, “What happened? I did something wrong, didn’t I?”

He stood and walked towards me. “You did nothing wrong, Sophie. This was nice of you.”

With lost looks and feeling horrible, he left me standing outside by myself. Walking inside, I looked through the different rooms of the tiny house. Heading into the office space, I saw that he was standing in a corner looking out the window. “Listen, forget the gift,” his arms reached towards me as he softly lifted me to the desk, and his lips crashed to mine.

Confused but getting mixed up in the emotion, I kissed him back hard. His eyes were still red. He moved his hands over my breast caressing them as he started undoing his belt. “We can’t do this here,” I panted between kisses.

He let me go and closed both doors, locking them. Not saying a word, he started to remove my clothes. Everything happened so fast, and we both ended up naked on top of the large oak desk. His hands moving over my body, he slid his large, erected cock into my pussy entrance. “Soaking wet,” he growled out before pushing inside of me.

Electric shock took over as my legs wrapped around his hips. Rocking to the fast motions, this was not fucking. Instead, he was making hard love to me. His breath started picking up, and I felt his muscles clenching. Letting my head fall on the desk, I let out a moan simultaneously with him, and the desk was showered with a mixture of our juices. We both froze as the door started to shake and we could hear Meg calling us.

“I’ll be out in a minute,” Cole yelled out. I giggled thinking about the situation, and he pressed his lips to mine, muffling the sound. We quickly dressed and walked out to the back. Putting my hair in a ponytail, my eyes met with Brody who stood next to the grill, smiling. He knew what had just happened, but Meg and Brooker had no clue.

“We are having American Cheeseburgers,” Meg announced, sitting in the chairs facing the beach.

“Smells like home,” I said immediately, wanting to take back the words.

Most of the evening Cole and I didn’t get a chance to talk between the banter of his parents. Brody went to the beach, and we moved to the loungers. Cole and I became invisible as the banter continued.

“You never answered my question,” Cole said softly, leaning up towards me. His eyes were glowing, and he looked oddly at peace. Then I remembered his question from the morning. “Miles. He’s nice, successful, and a great father. He treats me great, always having my company’s back.”

His eyes never left mine, almost as if he was searching for something. “Okay, my turn,” I posed at him.

“Your turn?” His face turned curious.

“Yeah, a question for a question.”

He nodded to agree.

“Why don’t you surf?”

His face turned quickly, and he looked up before meeting my eyes again. Our bodies close, knees touching, he softly touched my leg. I didn’t move, and he smiled. “The last time I surfed in the ocean, I lost two very special people.”

Connecting the dots, my voice left my body slowly, “Your wife and child.”

His face hardened, and he looked over to his parents. “Brody told you? He’s a horrible drunk.”

Trying to hide that I looked through his stuff, finally, I just came out with it. “I found the office full of your old stuff.”

His face turned back to mine. He looked almost relieved that he didn’t have to say the words. “Come on,” he stood and extended his arm out. Following him, we took a path that was cut out behind the property. The sun was all the way gone, and the moon glowed in the distance. In a small opening in the trees were the two headstones from the picture and a bench. It had fresh flowers placed on them, and I could tell this spot was taken care of. He moved his hand across the name of ‘Ella’.

“She drowned prepping for a surfing event. It was supposed to be the last competition as she was already thirty weeks pregnant. We both loved surfing, but she was hardcore. It was early in the morning, and I was still sleeping from the late-night we spent together. No one was up yet, and I’ll never forget the scream that came from my mom. She found her on her morning walks she takes. She drifted up on the beach. It’s dangerous to surf alone, but she was a pro, so I never worried.” Tears escaped his eyes as he told the story. I could feel his pain.

Remorse took over me. I had been such an idiot the whole time. I blamed him for cheating. I wanted to hold him, to share his pain but I didn’t want him to stop. He breathed, “We didn’t have a name as we waited to find out the sex after the birth. I went running to the beach, but her body was already cold when I arrived. I held her on the beach, not letting her go. The worst day of my life, and my heart was in pain for months following. My dad built the house for us, and we just purchased everything for the room in yellow and blue colors. After the funeral, my brothers never left my side. They didn’t even go in the water, and my mom didn’t step foot out of her backyard. I knew for them and me, I needed to leave. Get as far away from the sea as possible. When I went to pack my boxes, I noticed two pink blankets.” His face was now drenched with tears, his voice shaking. “She knew it was a girl, and Ella Lynn was stitched in the blanket. But, she was alive to her, so we held the funeral, and I left the same day to build a life far away from here. The first person I met was Maverick when my rental truck broke down in the middle of the forest. He gave me a place to stay and treated me like family.”
