He stood up, looking down at me, “guess the favor wasn’t that big after all.” And he walked out.

Back at the office, I sank in my chair taking a deep breath and pulled out my phone until the name Miles appeared. Drake walked in with a glass of water. Opening up my laptop, I saw Drake staring at me and his eyes looking deep into my soul. “You’re not honestly throwing yourself back at him, are you?” His voice was deep, which was nothing like he typically sounded.

“I think we are crossing professional lines here.”

He moved around to sit in the chair across from me. “Sophie, we both know those lines blurred long ago when I was untying a tie from your kitchen lights.”

Thinking back on the memory, it didn’t bring me happiness as I expected. “Drake, I’m going to tell you something, but you have to promise not to repeat it to anyone.”

He looked at me with mean girl eyes. “Last time this happened, you demoted me.”

“I didn’t demote you. I reassigned you.”

He rolled back his eyes, “Yeah, to a complete nightmare of a man.”

Looking down at my desk, I was trying to think of a way to tell him without making him feel I didn’t trust him. I piped up with a plan, “Okay, but first you tell me an embarrassing secret, so I have some ammo if you do tell anyone.”

“You are an HR nightmare for a boss. But I like it.” He leaned with his elbow on my desk.

I could see him think of the utmost amount of intimidation he could. “If you tell anyone, I’ll contact Paul’s buddy, who is a Mafia boss.”

My eyes widened. “You know I don’t take threats well, but I’ll give this a one-time pass, knowing that I might need to use his resources for other things in the future.”

Looking up, I watched him think deeply. “Okay, I got it. So a few years ago, I cheated on Paul.”

My jaw dropped in shock. “What?”

“Oh, don’t you judge, I was highly intoxicated at a bar, and we only had a hot and steamy makeout session. Now your turn.” Not wanting to show my hand to Drake that he was my best friend I didn’t question him.

My fingers entwined together, I stared at my knuckles before I could pull the strength to speak it out loud. I finally let the words out. “I’m pregnant.”

Drake stood up. “Oh my gosh!”

“Drake, calm down. I’m happy about it. The only issue is I don’t know if it’s Cole’s or Miles’s.”

He paused before coming around to hug me. “That’s amazing, Sophie, you’re going to be the best mom.”

His words resonated with me because I knew he was right. It was my child, my blood, my family and I would do anything for it. I continued, “The issue is Miles will not take the paternity test until I make him the CEO and demote Chris.”

Drake threw up his hands in frustration. “You always have the option to contact Cole and ask him to submit a test,” he suggested.

Shocked at his comment I snapped back quickly, “you mean the guy who was working with Jamie to overtake my company?”

Drake nodded knowing this was my only option. Sitting at my desk, I opened my phone and called Chris. “Chris, listen, I’m going to stretch Miles’s role to learn about the real estate business. He is looking to buy additional properties, and I think your partnership with him will only help.”

A long pause was on the other line. “Miles, that’s great. I play golf with him every week. I told him I was looking to retire soon, and he would be a great person to fill this opening.”

Not expecting his retirement so soon, I quickly ended the call. Looking back at my phone, I texted Miles the update and appointment to take the test in the morning. He replied with a checkmark. My stomach twisted, and everything in me wished that he was not the father. “Drake, when is the board meeting this week?”

He started to look through his phone. “Oh, it's Friday. We moved it to the conference room downstairs.”

Leaving the office, he turned around and looked at me. “You’re a boss bitch, and don’t let any man treat you different.” Smiling up at him, I appreciated his friendship.
