Chapter Twenty-Seven

Colton

Weeks had passed from the day she left. My heart was torn into pieces, and I decided to take time to help Maverick with the camp. He was fantastic to be around because he didn’t want to talk about things and was always positive. It was my day to take the boys on a hike. Hiking was my favorite of the activities because I had zero services to render, and it was just the wilderness and young boys talking about life. Packing my bag for the upcoming adventure, I heard a knock at the door. It was Maverick, and he had an odd look on his face. “Hey, I’m not trying to get into your issues, but I think you might want to see something.”

Listening to his words, my stomach tightened. He walked over to the TV that I forgot was even in my house. Lowering my voice as he was flipping through channels, I tried to get it out from him. “Is everything alright?” The channels stopped, and that asshole CEO was on the TV with Jamie. I made a deal with the devil, and my blood instantly boiled. Listening to the words, the screen cut to a picture of Sophie and me in Australia walking into the club. “What the hell is going on?” Maverick ignored my question and turned up the sound.

‘Forever Fitness CEO is calling an immediate board meeting to suspend Sophie, the majority shareholder in her parent company Boss Babe LLC.’ The pictures of our night at the club flashed in front of me. My face froze as guilt filled my soul. Walking up to turn off the TV, I grabbed my bag and headed for the door.

Maverick ran behind and stood in front of me. “You didn’t even hear the entire story.”

Shaking my head, not wanting to admit to my best friend the horrible person I was, I reached for his shoulder. “This was the plan all along. In the beginning, I was a part of it, I need to fix this for her.” Dropping my arm and reaching for the door, the air was filled with words I would never forget.

“So you planned to get her pregnant?” Turning his direction swiftly, he had an odd smirk on his face.

“What did you just say?”

“She’s pregnant, and I’m guessing from that dickhead’s reaction, it’s not his.”

The bag slid from my arm. My heart was beating a hundred miles a minute. Coming out of my daze, I raked my hands through my hair and whispered, “I’m going to be a father.” Nervous laughter filled the space as my body filled with joy. Maverick reached his arm to meet my shoulder and gave me the biggest bro hug ever.

“Should I give you two a moment?” Lucy was standing in the doorway holding a coffee mug. Maverick was one lucky man because Lucy was the sweetest woman in the world and put up with his crazy ass.

“I’m going to be a dad.” She jumped as I screamed out loud in her direction, and we ran to her to have her join in our celebration hug.

“That’s great. Who’s the mom?”

Maverick and I just started laughing. Moving quickly, I backed away and ran for my room. Then, packing up random things for an overnight bag, I ran back through the living room, passing them both and out to my car. I needed to get to the airport and see her in person. Drake had been in contact with me on the side, mostly to ensure I gave her some space. Little did he know the new corporate headquarters had an address added to his signature block of his e-mails. Debating the entire way to the airport if I should call him and let him know that I was coming to see her, I decided to make her talk to me without his approval.

The plane landed, and the New York lights gleamed on a fall night. Rushing through the airport, I hailed a cab and directed it to the corporate headquarters. Knowing it was past hours, I recalled many nights that Sophie stayed later than everyone else. The taxi stopped in front of the large building with several levels. I was wearing jeans, chucks and a gray ‘V’ neck shirt. My head was disoriented and felt like hell, but inside I was nervous and excited just to be around her again. She needed to know everything, and I would kidnap her if I had to for her to listen. Scoping out the building, I noticed a security desk on the main floor.

The building was filled with camera systems and multiple areas one needed to scan a badge at. Unless I got bit by a spider or found Spiderman himself, I wasn’t getting in that building. Looking above, I could see the dark clouds and large raindrops started to patter. Strolling into the building for shelter, I immediately went to the desk. “Hi, I’m interviewing for Boss Babe Incorporated.”

The man stayed in his seat, and gave me a glance once. “At 10 p.m.?”

His question was valid, and I sucked at coming up with a plan to get in. “Yeah, they are a 24-hour company.”

He let out a laugh before pointing me to the door. “You can come back when the building opens in the morning.”

Without risking getting thrown out of the building, I walked out and noticed a coffee shop that was still open across the street. Taking a seat at the booth, I ordered a coffee and made a call.

“Hello,” my brother’s voice was whispery like I woke him up.

“Oh shit, Dalton, I’m sorry. I need your help.” Dalton was a member of the elite forces for Australia, and after telling him my situation, the other side of the phone was silent. “Are you still there?” Desperation was filled in my voice.

“4832 Williams Street suite 1004.”

Lost and now wondering if he was drunk, I became frustrated. “What? Are you drinking?”

He laughed through the other end. “No, that’s her address. Why don’t you just go to her home?”

Forgetting my brother’s ways of getting the information, I thanked him quickly for the address.

“Hey Cole, don’t fuck this up. I can’t take you waking me up at all hours of the night.”

Smiling at his attitude, I hung up the phone and googled the address. She lived only a block away. Finishing my coffee, I headed out in the rain.

The building looked like every other rich person’s building in New York, and nerves started to set in. She has a bellhop like her corporate office, so I walked around back for the emergency exit door, which was not locked.

“So much for security,” I said to myself as I snuck into the stairway. After about ten stair levels, I realized I was only halfway to her floor. ‘I really needed to get back in the gym.’ I thought to myself as I started to climb the stairs again. I made it to the top, and before entering the landing of the floor, I started to pace, trying to figure out exactly what I was going to say. I started forming the exact sentences in my mind, talking to myself like an idiot. “Hi, I’m happy that I trapped you. Now forgive me and let’s get married.” Nope, that was the kind of thing that only worked on desperate women, and she was anything but that. “Hi, the news said I was the father of your baby, so you can’t hate me forever.”

Yep, that sounded a lot better. Opening the door from the emergency staircase, I noticed her suite was the only door on that level. My heart started to spin, and I pulled out my credit card and jammed it into the edge of the door. My brothers used to lock me out of my room as a joke growing up, and it worked then. This was not in an old house, but it was all I could think about as I knew she would not answer and would definitely call the cops if I knocked. She was stubborn, but that was what I liked about her. Strong, independent, and she didn’t take anyone treating her less than what she deserved. Sticking the card into the door and wiggling it a few times, the door stirred open. To my surprise, it worked.

Intruding the foyer, the place was large with a table in the middle and two staircases wrapped around on both sides of the room. It smelled sweet like wildflowers, just how I remembered her tasting. The place screamed her style. She had large paintings that I could tell matched her rich taste. My clothes had dried a little on my way up the stairs, and I moved my hands through my hair to smooth it out. Taking a deep breath, I slowly looked in each room before entering. The place was dark and quiet. Climbing up the staircase, it had a hall to the left and a door to the right.

I made my way towards the door and slowly opened it. Guessing correctly, it was a large bedroom with windows as walls that showed a beautiful view of the city. It was dark, but I could see her gorgeous silhouette in the middle of the bed. I walked to the edge and stared down. Her long dark hair sprawled across the pillow, and my stomach fluttered as I watched her sleep. She was in a sexy silk nightgown, and my mind could only focus on her perfect body. Gawking over her for a moment, I was almost worried about waking her. My eyes rolled down her body, watching her feet move a bit. Then, captivated by her curves, I eyed her body back up to see her eyes looking directly at me, and the next thing I felt was a giant wooden thing strike the side of my head, and it was dark.
