Theannoyingnoiseof my cell phone vibrating on the nightstand beside the bed draws me out of a deep sleep. I’m so disoriented that it takes me a moment to realize I’m not in my own bed. The room around me that I’m staying in at the bed and breakfast is pitch black. Not even a sliver of moonlight comes through the windows, only the light blue glow of my phone giving any light as an unknown number flashes across it.

Who can possibly be calling me from an unknown number at… THREE in the freaking morning.

I’m so not answering whoever has the nerve to call me in the middle of the night, I think to myself as I silence the call, laying back down in the comfortable bed. Just as I start to drift back to sleep, the vibrating starts again. With a groan, I stare at the phone, ready to pull up my Jessica-Panties—aptly named after Jessica, my spitfire of a friend—and curse someone out, when I see Justin’s name flash across the screen.

Justin is the boyfriend of Becca,my best friend, who recently became her baby daddy. They just had my beautiful goddaughter, Nina, a few months ago, and I love her like she was my own. For Justin to be calling at this hour, something has to be wrong, since he’d mostly left his party days in the past with the birth of his daughter.

Panic courses through me as I answer the phone.

“Hello, Justin? What’s wrong? Is Nina okay? How about Becca? Where are you?”

“Umm… hi?” A deep voice that is definitely not Justin’s replies through the phone.

“Who is this? Why do you have Justin’s phone? And why are you calling me at three a.m.?” I demand.

“Well, if you’d let me get a word in, I’ll tell you.” The unknown man says with a deep chuckle, causing me to huff in annoyance at him. “I’m Officer Russells, with the Lighthouse Landing Police Department.”

“Oh for goodness’ sake! Those idiots got themselves arrested, didn’t they?” I interrupt once more, suddenly reminding me again that this comfortable bed I’m in is not my own, but that of the Lighthouse Inn. It’s a bed and breakfast located in the small town of Lighthouse Landing, Maine.

I was here with my friends, and the rest of the Mooseheads hockey team for the NHL draft night held in this quaint little town. Quite a few of the team members had been drafted by professional teams last night, and when I had left to go to bed, they were still out partying. Which is what I’m assuming resulted in this three a.m. wake up call.

“Ma’am, I can’t tell you any information if you keep interrupting me.” The officer says with a grumbling tone. “I have a group of your friends down here, they asked me to call you.”

“Are they being charged? You can’t charge them. They just got drafted, they would lose their contracts.”

“They aren’t being charged. I just need someone to come pick them up.” He rushes out before I have a chance to interrupt him again.

“Oh, well that’s good, but why are you calling me?” I asked with a yawn as I lay back down in the bed ready to fall back asleep.

“Well, they told me I couldn’t call their coach because he would kill them. My chief wasn’t so keen on them ruining our small-town murder stats for the next century, so he asked who else they wanted me to call. The big red-headed one suggested you, and the rest seemed to agree. When you didn’t answer the call from the station, they suggested I try from this phone.”

“Oh, yeah, Coach Benning will definitely kill them all. That’s his one rule, no calling him from jail.” I respond as I start slipping back into sleep now that I know everything is okay.

“They mentioned that, but could you come pick them up before you fall…”

Next thing I know the phone is buzzing against my ear, and I grumble, seeing it’s another call from Justin’s phone.

“What, now?” I mumble.

“Ma’am, before you fall asleep, I need you to come get them out of here.” The officer whose name I can’t remember yells through the phone.

“Why are you yelling? And why can’t you just let them go, or keep them until morning?”

He tells me sternly, “Ma’am, the Chief says someone needs to come get them. If I have to keep them overnight, then I have to book them. Please, just come get them, we’re only a block away from the B & B, I can even have an officer pick you up and bring you here.”

“No, no, it’s fine. Just give me a minute and I’ll be there. And you tell them that they owe me big for this.” I announce while sitting up abruptly and throwing the covers back to get out of bed.

I give my pillows one last longing look before climbing out of the bed. I slide my feet into slippers and stumble my way out the door to go pick up a bunch of idiot hockey players at the police station.

Once I get to the police station, I find not only do I have to pick up a bunch of idiot hockey players, but also their stupid girlfriends—who happen to be my friends.

“Seriously?” I ask while Brayden, Nicole, Justin, Becca, CJ, Haley, Drew, Jessica, and Mikey all smile at me. The nine of them are sitting, lined up on a bench in the waiting room, not looking the least bit put out by their predicament. In fact, they look like they are trying to hold in their laughter.

A bunch of idiots, I tell you.

Without another word, I turn my back on them, only to come face to face with the hottest guy I’ve ever laid eyes on.
