“Damnit, Amelia, stop shutting me out. This bond between us,” I motioned between the three of us, “isn’t going to just go away. Every time you put up that wall, it hurts both physically and emotionally. I know it hurts you, too, to cut yourself off from us.” I leaned forward, crossed my legs, and laid my hands on hers, the closest body part to me. “I know this whole thing is scary and has developed at supersonic speed. That what has developed between us is unconventional at best, but I—” Miguel cleared his throat. “Sorry, we need you on every level, but we also want to be completely honest about who and what we are. If you keep pushing us away, it will only lead to a long and miserable life for all of us.”

Amelia pushed my hands away and jumped off the bed to pace beside it.

“Okay, this doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere,” Miguel interrupted. “Let me tell you my story, how I learned that submission was more than being told what to do and how it became one of the missing pieces of my soul.”

“No, you don’t have to do that. Neither one of you should have to explain yourselves to me.” Amelia wrung her hands as she paced. “I’m the one that’s broken here. Obviously, you need someone who can fit your lifestyle, someone who wants what you want. That’s not me, and I’m the one that should be apologizing for it, for wasting time better spent finding.” She threw her hands up. “Something better than this.” I could hear the pain and frustration in her voice.

“Amelia, come sit back down. I didn’t mean to upset you, and in no way was I trying to infer that you were broken or not what we want.”

“Damnit, I know that here.” She rubbed her chest above her heart. “But this.” She smacked the side of her head. “Won’t shut up. I hear what you are saying, I want to understand you both, every part of you, and I want to be open to anything you both suggest.” Tears were silently streaming down her face as she stopped and turned toward us. “But I don’t think I can. I really think everything I have been through has changed me beyond hope.” Her words broke as tears overtook her.

I opened my arms to her. All sexual need disappeared as both my tiger and me needed to comfort our mate, to push these doubts away. We needed to show her how sexy, strong, intelligent, and awe-inspiring she really was.

She climbed back on the bed slowly, her eyes full of unease and a plea for acceptance through the shimmer of tears still unshed. “I don’t know how to shut it up.” She closed her eyes as she melted into my arms, releasing the tears pooling beneath her lids.

Miguel stood and walked around so that he could snuggle in behind her. “Let us help,” he whispered.

A small nod was her only answer. I met Miguel’s gaze over her head. “Tell her the story.” I kissed the top of Amelia’s head as she curled further into my embrace. My shirt began to cling to my chest as her tears continued to fall. The darker side of me popped up unexpectedly; the need to hurt those who hurt Amelia was stronger than I had ever felt. Miguel’s touch brought me back and relaxed muscles that had tensed on their own.

“I used to feel the same way you do. Submission made you weak or was something forced on another. When Leo first told me about this club he dreamed of creating, I wasn’t sure how to take it. I didn’t want to offend him, but I didn’t really think a club like that would take off, especially out here in the middle of this remote jungle,” Miguel said, beginning his story.
