Chapter 25

Niko

“I’m going.”

Leo cut me off. “No, you’re not. You and Miguel will stay here. I don’t need two freshly mated males going crazy in the midst of a rescue of their female. Don’t make me order you to stay.” He looked down his nose at us, disapproval etched on his face.

I watched them rush through the gate and out of sight. I assumed they were going to gather more help and find our best tracker to assist Alaska on the ground.

“What was that magic?” Miguel whispered as he rubbed his throat.

“I don’t know, but we need to let them know about it.”

“They won’t listen to us. Not now.”

I looked at him. Love roared to life in me at the sight of him. “We have to make them. I can’t lose Amelia or you now. I may have rebelled against the idea of two mates, but now I can’t see life without you both.”

Miguel scooted closer. “Our bond started before Amelia arrived.” He placed his hand on my arm. I framed his face with my hands and took his lips with mine. This wasn’t a sweet kiss, but one filled with need, fear, and every unshared emotion I had for him. He gave back just as much as I gave, our tongues warring with each other. He nipped my lip and growled deep in his chest.

“I know.” I gazed into his eyes. “I’m sorry. For everything. The rejection, the denial, trying to shove it into something I could control. We were never just partners that would scene together, but that was the only way I could accept the feelings I have for you.”

“I know. I forgave you for that a long time ago. I knew you needed time and space, but we don’t have that anymore. I know my decision, and now you know yours.” His eyes shone with love and determination.

“Yes, I do.” I wrapped him in my arms, leaned down, and took his lips with mine. I tried to show him with my kiss what I couldn’t put into words. “I’m going to fuck up, I’m going to make mistakes, but I won’t run away, not anymore.”

“Good! Now, let’s get our girl back!” Miguel smiled and jumped to his feet. He staggered a step and rubbed his chest.

“I feel it, too, the deep loss settling into my soul.” I slowly stood, my body refusing to stand straight.

Miguel disappeared into the house, returning moments later fully clothed. “Here.” He tossed me my tactical pants and T-shirt. “Let’s go help them find Amelia.”

“If they’ll even let us past the door.” I pulled my shirt over my head and took off at a jog behind Miguel. We rounded the corner of the building to find a small group of men, Kat, and Kymber huddled together.

“Any word from Alaska?” Jonah, our head of security, asked.

“She hasn’t found any sign of them yet.” Leo sighed. “We know he took her out here.” He pointed to a spot on the map they had laid out on the hood of a jeep.

“They are using magic,” I commented as we approached them. “He encased her in some type of blue bubble that made her float. It followed him on command, and when they left the compound, it’s like she just disappeared from our tribond.”

“Do you think you could feel her if you were closer?” Kat asked.

“We should be able to feel something now, but it’s like the magic cut the bond in half.” I rubbed my chest again.

“What kind of magic would do that?” Leo rubbed the scruff that had begun to grow along his jawline.

I watched the rest of the team working to get supplies gathered, consulting with Jonah and Tito to determine the best path of action. Pride swelled within me to see our security team working together like a well-oiled machine. Miguel and I weren’t the only ones who loved Amelia. She had touched every person in this compound in one way or another.

“Maybe Alaska would know,” Kymber offered.

“Maybe.” DJ circled his arms around his mate. “We’ll have to wait until she checks in to ask.”

Miguel leaned into my side, and I wrapped an arm around his shoulders, giving him as much comfort as possible.

“Why, don’t you guys have a connection to her?” I asked. The last I knew; the high priestess of the local coven had worked her magic connecting Alaska to our pride web. “I thought she was integrated like the rest of us.”

“We do, but it’s not quite the same,” Diego replied. “Before the spell was cast, Alaska requested that only a few of us be able to connect with her. Diego and I, along with Leo. When she camouflages herself, the magic she uses cuts her off from the pride,” Tito answered.

We all turned to look at him, but Leo was the first to ask, “Her magic cuts off the bond?”
