“Because I could feel how sad and worried he was. I just wanted to make sure he was okay. That Zev didn’t need to step in and help him with anything.”

“Dammit!” Sam snarled, raking a hand through his thick hair. “Rachel and I should have been there for him. Should have helped him more with the children.”

“No, it wasn’t that,” Danica said, so softly Amira had to strain to hear her. “He was worried about Walker and Willow. He loves them as if they are his own and doesn’t know if he is handling everything with them correctly. And, even though he is extremely busy with the children and pride things, he’s…” she paused, as if unsure if she should go on.

“Tell us,” Zev ordered.

Taking a deep breath, Danica swallowed hard before continuing, “He’s lonely, Zev. He works his ass off for the pride, comes home and takes care of the kids, and goes to bed alone. He doesn’t want to be with anyone but his mate, refuses to be with anyone but her, but doesn’t have the time to look for her because of all of his responsibilities.” She gave Amira a small smile. “But, I guess that part is taken care of now, right?”

“Right, little one,” Amira agreed, her eyes misting over with tears she refused to let fall. Even though he’d never met her before, her mate wanted her, and only her. She knew what Danica was saying didn’t mean that had always been the case, but it was now, and that was what mattered. She wondered what he would say if he knew that she’d never even dated before, choosing to save herself for her mate, if she ever found him.

“Please,” Danica whispered, “please let me try to connect with him, Zev. Let me try to find him and give him the family he deserves.”

Zev stiffened, his eyes locked with his sister’s for a long moment, before he finally nodded. “Fine, but if he is in pain of any kind, you will immediately sever any link you have with him, Danica. You understand?”

“Understood,” Danica promised.

“Let’s go back to the safety of our house for this,” Karma said, her eyes once again going to the sky. “I feel too exposed out here now, after everything that’s happened. I have a feeling it isn’t over yet. There is always the possibility that they will return.”

“Agreed,” Zev grunted, taking his mate’s hand and leading the way to their home. “Let’s get this done and find our friend.”

Amira glanced around the area one more time before walking over and linking her arm through Sam’s. When he looked down at her in surprise, she gave him a small smile. “Family sticks together, right?”

Moisture filled his eyes, and he gave her a nod as he placed a hand over hers where it set in the crook of his arm. “Right.”

“It wasn’t your fault,” she told him quietly. “You did what Rylan wanted you to. You saved his children. That is exactly what you should have done.”

“But, I lost my son in the process,” Sam said in a tortured tone.

“We will find him. We won’t stop until we do. No matter what.” She threw his words back at him, willing him to grab hold of them. Of the hope and determination she felt.

“Whatever it takes,” he growled, his hand tightening on hers.
