Just One Night

-------------------------------------------

Chapter One

It wasn’t originallymy idea. Emerald came up with it, which was strange, considering that it was her own brother that I planned on fucking over.

She leaned over the scarred wooden table between us at the coffee shop. “Think about it. He is obsessed with her. Has been since middle school. Obsessed.” Her eyes went wide and I believed her. I mean, he’d tried hitting on her when we were together, which should have been a red flag, but ignoring red flags had become my hobby when I started dating Wyatt.

“How come you’re willing to help me get him like this?” I asked. Em and I had been friends since before Wyatt and I started dating, and even though he had broken up with me, we hadn’t stopped hanging out. Sure, it was a little weird at first, but she’d let me know if it came to choosing me or him, she’d choose me. Didn’t say much about Wyatt’s strengths as a brother, did it? He also hadn’t been strong as a boyfriend, but I’d been too dazzled by his abs and his smile and the way he’d said all the right things to care at the time. He also gave amazing head, which definitely had something to do with it. I’d hand over all my common sense in exchange for great sex.

“I know I love him because he’s my brother and everything, but he’s a complete asshole and it’s time someone told him that he can’t have everything he wants. Plus, I have revenge experience.”

That she did. When Em found out her ex had cheated on her, she’d managed to have her car impounded. I’d stopped her from any further sabotage, but I had to admit, it sounded really satisfying.

I sipped at my iced mocha latte. Wyatt had definitely gotten what he wanted from me before he decided he was done and broke up with me in a text message. A message in which he’d used emojis. It wasn’t cheating on me, but he’d treated me like trash nonetheless. I’d thought that we were headed for a serious commitment, had planned my future with him, and then he dropped me. Like I didn’t even matter. I’d thought I was going to share his name and his life, and I was left with nothing.

She pushed her curly brown hair over her shoulder. “He’s gotten every girl he’s ever wanted. Except Esme.”

Esme. Esme Bell.

“He asked her out in front of me once. He was drunk, and she turned him down, but I wonder how many other times he’s asked,” I said.

Emerald gave me a look.

“How many times have you seen him ask her out?”

She laughed and shoved the last bite of her croissant in her mouth. “I mean, are we counting the times he straight up asked her to fuck him, or the times when he tried to buy her a drink at her own bar?” Esme was the most-beloved bartender at the only drinking establishment in our small Maine seaside town.

“I can’t believe I dated someone so gross.”

“Hey, he’s my brother. I’m the one who has to share DNA with him.” She made a face.

I’d shared plenty of things with Wyatt, but I didn’t need to talk about it in front of his sister.

“So, it’s simple: seduce Esme and rub it in his face. Oh, and make sure I’m there to see it. I want to treasure that moment in my days to come, and you will too. It’ll be worth it.” She gazed off into the distance, a smile on her face.

It would be pretty great to see the guy who shattered my heart get his comeuppance. As much as I wanted to deny that I’d just been having fun with him, and it hadn’t been serious, I’d given him my foolish heart and now I couldn’t get it back. The thing that lived in my chest now was a sad, broken thing. Getting back at him might not mend it, but it would definitely make me feel better.

Emerald took our plates and cups up to the counter and stuck them in the bucket to be washed. I stood up and brushed crumbs off my lap.

“Okay, I’m in. I mean, it’s not like it’ll be a hardship, sleeping with Esme.” Just saying her name felt like I was savoring something delicious in my mouth. It didn’t hurt that she was also hot as fuck.

“Mmm, I know, right?” Emerald said, wiggling her eyebrows. She and I had also bonded by being out in our small town.

“I thought she wasn’t your type?” I asked.

“I mean, she’s not, but I’d let her top me if I was in the right mood.”

I’d let her top me in any mood, I thought.

“Let’s go scope her out,” Emerald said as we both walked toward our respective cars. I paused and fiddled with my keys.

“You want to do what now?”

Emerald grinned and leaned on her car. “Let’s go check her out. Formulate a plan.”

“Right now?”
