“When we wake up? We should probably have breakfast here.”

“Sounds good. I’ll also see where the best places to stop for gas and food are on our route,” she said. That’s right. This had originally been a planned sister trip.

“How’s Gretchen?” I asked, even though I hated saying her name.

“Puking her guts out all the time. She sends me graphic details at all hours.” Yeah, I got the same info from Wyatt when he wanted to complain.

“We’re going dress shopping when I get back. She bought a fake belly to use for the fittings,” she said.

Now that was something I couldn’t picture.

“She knows she’s going to be huge, right?” I asked.

Natalie shook her head. “I still don’t think it’s sunk in yet. I think she’s convinced she’s going to carry small or something.”

“I don’t think that’s how that works.” I finished the cheesecake and set the empty plate back on the cart.

Now I was ready for bed. It was only eight here, but I was still on Maine time, which was several hours ahead.

“If you want to go to bed, go ahead. I’m going to shower and then read for a while,” she said.

I brushed my teeth and changed into my pajamas in the bathroom. Natalie and I had changed in front of each other when we were kids, but now things were totally different. We were practically strangers.

“You can keep the lamp on, it’s fine,” I said, when Natalie went to turn the lights off as I got into bed.

“You could always sleep under any condition,” she said.

That was true. I had a whole list of bizarre places I’d fallen asleep. It was a family joke at this point.

“Thanks again, Em. It really does mean a lot,” she said. This was the first time she’d said my name out loud. It made me feel warm inside, but I was going to blame that on the cheesecake.

“You’re welcome,” I said, even though she wasn’t. It didn’t matter. We were stuck together for the next few days and being a massive bitch wasn’t going to make things go any faster.

“Goodnight,” I said, before I closed my eyes and rolled onto my side away from her.

“Goodnight,” she whispered.
