“Yeah, fine.” I struggled to get my feet under me and make my way to the thermostat. I fumbled with it for a second, but I figured it out.

The cool air blasted and I turned around slowly to find Natalie sitting there staring at me.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing.” She shook her head, her curls flying everywhere.

“You want any more of this?”she asked.

“No, I’m good.”

I lay back down on my own bed.

Why was I so off today? Like the world had tilted ever so slightly to one side, and I was having trouble regaining my center of gravity.

“Fine, I’ll just finish these all by myself,” she said, and she did.

“Mmm,” she said, savoring the last bite of cake, licking the fork.

I wanted to escape to the bathroom to take another shower, but I’d just taken one, so there were no other options.

I got out my phone and sent the pictures of the desserts I’d taken to Linley. I knew she’d want to see them. I always took dessert pictures. She was always looking for inspiration.

Pretty, but insubstantial. Give me a sheet cake any day.

I agreed. Plus, not much could top those scones from today. Simple and perfect.

We’d eaten the rest of the box we’d gotten on the drive, and I was wishing I’d saved at least one for tonight.

A scone in bed would have been perfect. Maybe with some lavender and mint tea.

Paige was jealous of the museum visit and the scones. I told her that they shipped, and I’d get her a care package for Christmas.

My phone dinged with another new message.

Wyatt. Fucking finally.

Sorry. Got busy. I’ll pay you extra.

That was it. Typical.

Thanks for getting back to me like five days later, asshole. You owe me even more extra now.

He typed a few messages and deleted them before responding with I’m not going to get extorted by my own sister. I agreed to pay you and I will.

Wyatt agreed to a lot of things and then didn’t do them. I should have made him pre-pay. The chances of me seeing money at this point were getting slimmer and slimmer.

“Fuck off,” I said under my breath.

“Your brother?” Natalie said. I looked over at her. She was also on her phone.

“Yup. He finally got back to me. He did apologize, but not very well. And he still hasn’t paid me.”

Natalie sat up. “Do you need money?”

“No. Yes. That’s none of your business.”

I’d gotten my paycheck, so I was fine for the rest of the trip, but things had been close there for a little while. Like the last month and the one before it.
