“Nat. You literally have a degree in communications. You’re qualified.”

“I don’t know…” she trailed off.

“You don’t have to, but I think you should at least consider it. Paige could help you out. I know she does some work transcribing a podcast, so I think she’d know where you can figure out how to do it.”

Paige was always a wealth of information on so many things.

“I’ll think about it,” she finally said.

We stopped for lunch and got salads to eat in the truck.

“Remind me never to move ever again,” Natalie said.

“Excuse me, you’re not the one driving the damn truck,” I pointed out.

“I know. I should probably learn how to drive. It wouldn’t be so bad in Castleton. There aren’t any highways.”

“Or stoplights. Yet,” I added.

“I’ll let you try my car if you want.” That was probably a terrible idea, but how much damage could she do on a remote back road? That’s how I’d learned.

“I’m so used to having public transportation or being able to walk somewhere. I can’t rely on other people to drive me around anymore,” Natalie said.

“Let me know when you’re ready to try and I’ll help you,” I said.

“Thanks,” she said. “That would mean a lot.”

Sure, she could take classes, but they were expensive and they didn’t have any in Castleton. She’d have to get someone to drive her somewhere, and she’d have to practice places that she wasn’t comfortable. Best to start out locally and work her way up.

“No problem,” I said.

A few miles later we stopped a rest stop that had a little walking path so we could stretch our legs.

“I’m so tired of sitting,” Natalie said, reaching down to touch her toes and then reach up to stretch her arms and back.

She looked so pretty today in her floaty summer dress with pineapples on it, her hair in a loose bun with curls escaping everywhere.

“See something you like?” she asked, catching me staring.

“What?” I asked, looking down at the ground.

“Uh huh,” she said with a smirk.

I felt my face get red and I started walking back toward the truck.

Natalie hopped in after me, humming to herself as she arranged the skirt of her dress on her legs.

I kept my eyes on the mirrors as I backed out of the spot and drove toward the exit to get back on the highway. I couldn’t let Natalie distract me from driving.

More miles flew by and I dreaded getting home more and more. I had a confrontation with Wyatt coming, and I wasn’t looking forward to it. Making him pay me was my top priority and making sure he knew he was an asshole for the bullshit with the rooms was second.

“Aww,” Natalie said. “Gretchen just felt the baby for the first time.”

It was still so surreal, knowing that Natalie and I were both the baby’s aunts. Obviously we weren’t related-related, but it was still weird as hell.

Why did my brother have to pick her sister to knock up? He couldn’t have picked anyone else? Honestly, it was shocking this was the first one he’d gotten pregnant. Wyatt wasn’t known for his safe-sex practices. I hated how much information about my brother’s sex life I’d learned against my will. To Paige’s credit, she hadn’t told me too many details, for which I was grateful. I’d wanted him to make things work with her when they first started dating, because I liked her so much, but then I’d seen that she was way too good for him, and then it was only a matter of time before he fucked everything up.
