I let out a long breath.

“Everything okay?” Natalie asked.

“Yeah. Wyatt actually came through without me having to threaten him. It’s shocking.” This was probably the first time in my life that he hadn’t fucked me over. Maybe this whole baby thing was improving his character.

“Wow, good for you. I was going to get Gretchen to bug him about it,” she said.

“You don’t have to do that,” I said.

She turned on her side to face me. “Your brother treats you like shit and someone should call him on it.”

I mean, yes, but no one ever had. I guess I pretty much lost hope that anyone ever would.

“Well, you don’t need to do that because he paid up,” I said.

A seagull got curious and started inching toward us, probably looking for snacks to steal.

“We don’t have anything for you. Go find a small child holding a hotdog to pester,” Natalie said, waving her arm and scaring the seagull away.

I immediately went to the website that had the couch I wanted and ordered it. No more thinking about it. That damn couch was mine.

“Let’s go put our feet in the water,” Natalie said, getting up and stripping off her cover. I tried not to watch every single movement she made and failed.

Her body had changed in the past few years. Gotten rounder, softer, fuller. Her suit hugged every curve.

“Come on,” she said, and pulled me to my feet. I pulled my t-shirt dress over my head, feeling less-than-cute in my suit.

“I like this on you,” she said, pulling at the sleeve of my rash guard. “You look like you’re a surfer.”

We both knew I was nothing of the kind. I could flop on my stomach on a boogie board, but a lot of people could.

“Someday I’d like to take surfing lessons,” I said. “If I ever get to take a vacation where they give surfing lessons.”

“That sounds cool. Take me with you,” she said with a laugh.

“Okay,” I said.

We walked down to the edge of the water and let it lap at our toes.

“Oh, shit, I forgot how cold ocean water is. I got used to heated pool water, yikes.”

Natalie gritted her teeth but waded in a little further.

“Are you going swimming?” I asked.

“Why not?”

She turned to face me and walked backwards. I stayed with my toes submerged and watched her.

She smiled before she dunked her head under the water, coming up gasping and sputtering a moment later.

“How is it?” I asked.

“Refreshing,” she said, breathing hard from the temperature shock. “Be adventurous with me.”

If I hadn’t dragged her into a lake in all her clothes like two days ago, I would have had a better excuse, but I didn’t.

“If I get hypothermia, I’m blaming you,” I said.
