“You should try online dating with me,” I said. “Find someone to kiss. Natalie, twenty-one, looking for kisses only.”

“I can’t kiss a stranger,” she said, making a face.

“Why not?” I’d kissed strangers before. It could be hit and miss, but it could be very, very fun.

“I don’t like kissing people I don’t know. What if they don’t floss?” Natalie said, shuddering.

I guess that was a good point.

“Well, we can find you someone who flosses. What about a hot dentist?” I suggested. “There’s something sexy about that white coat.”

Natalie burst out laughing.

“I’ll put that on my profile, if I decide to make one,” she said.

“I’ll give you updates when I put mine up. But I’m not looking for guys, so your results will probably be different,” I said.

“True,” she said and closed her eyes. I thought she’d fallen asleep until she opened her eyes again.

“Can we try something?” she asked.

“That depends on what it is,” I said. I think she’d had a few too many drinks. I’d never seen drunk Natalie before. Well, I guess I had at prom, but we hadn’t been talking at that point.

“Will you kiss me?” she asked.

“What?” I almost rolled right off the couch in my shock. She had definitely had too much to drink. It was time to go to bed.

“Will you kiss me? I just…I don’t know.”

I stared at her, wondering if she was serious or if she was fucking with me. I hadn’t ruled out the second option completely.

“I think it’s time for me to go to bed,” I said, starting to get up. The chances of her even remembering this tomorrow were probably small.

“Wait,” Natalie said, reaching out to grab my arm. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to. It was just an idea.”

“A weird idea,” I said.

“Why is it weird?”

I stared at her.

“Are you serious? What is happening right now?”

“I’m sorry,” she said, letting go of me. “It was a bad idea.”

“I’m gonna go to bed,” I said, taking both of our glasses to the sink. My legs were unsteady, and for a moment I forgot how the sink worked. With trembling hands, I rinsed the glasses and put them in the dishwasher.

“Hey,” a voice said from behind me, making me jump.

“Jesus, don’t do that. It’s rude to sneak up on people.”

I turned around to find her standing close to me.

“I’m sorry about the kissing thing. Just forget it,” she said.

“I plan to,” I said.

We didn’t say goodnight to one another. I just walked past her toward the bedroom and closed the door behind me.

I still had to brush my teeth, but I didn’t want to risk running into Natalie, so I waited until I was sure she was probably asleep and then I tiptoed to the bathroom, did my thing as quickly as possible, and scurried back to bed.

I’d promised her I was going to forget her asking if I’d kiss her, but I didn’t.

I thought about it for the rest of the night and into the morning.
