I was afraid to talk to her.

“Do you think she was just wasted? You know some people can get a little handsy when they drink,” Esme said.

“She didn’t have that much. And she wasn’t slurring or incoherent or anything like that.”

Esme thought for a moment.

“Well, you might want to consider the fact that she might have wanted to kiss you.”

That was the last thing I wanted to consider, because it didn’t make sense.

“I don’t think so,” I said.

Esme looked at me for a long moment, but then someone called for her attention.

“I’ll be right back. But think about it.”

I had been thinking about it. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. My mind had taken that moment and written an ending where I would have told Natalie that I would kiss her, and then what would have happened after in that alternate reality.

What would it be like to kiss Natalie?

Esme came back and leaned on the bar again.

“So? What’s the verdict?” she asked.

“No fucking clue,” I said.

“I think you need to talk to her. I think all this uncertainty is going to drive you up a wall. Just talk to her. That’s my friendly advice.”

It was good advice. I thanked her and sipped the rest of my drink before handing her my card and making sure to tip well. Esme always got mad when I tipped her really high, but there was nothing she could do about it.

I left the bar feeling uneasy. I had to talk to Natalie, and I didn’t want to. Sooner was probably better than later, but I was going to put it off if I could.

I pulled into my driveway and there was someone sitting on the front steps of the cabin.

Natalie.

“How did you get here?” I asked.

“I paid Gretchen to drive me,” she said.

“Okay,” I said, walking toward her. “And why did you come here when you could have just texted?”

“Because I wanted to talk to you in person,” she said, standing up and moving aside so I could open the door.

“Come on in,” I said.

“Thanks,” she said.

I set my stuff down and Natalie went to the couch she’d slept on less than a day ago.

“Do you want anything?” I asked.

“Maybe just a glass of water?” I poured one for each of us and took my place beside her on the couch.

“So?” I asked.
