“So fucking typical. I’ll call him,” I said. He was not going to get out of this. He’d made this damn bed, so it was time to deal with that.

I called him and it went right to voice mail.

“You get your sorry ass over here and be a fucking father and support your fiancée,” I said, and hung up, then sent him a text message reiterating my same point.

Gretchen was smiling and doing her rounds, but you could tell that she wasn’t okay.

As much as I didn’t like her, and as much of a monster as she was, she didn’t deserve to have Wyatt bail on her like this.

Natalie and I worked on our drinks and mingled, always keeping our eyes out for Wyatt.

“I will hunt him down,” I said to Natalie under my breath. “There’s only so many places he can hide.”

“There he is,” Natalie said, pointing with her glass.

Wyatt was striding across the grass wearing khaki shorts and a black polo.

“Finally,” I said. Gretchen grabbed him and they went into the house. Probably so she didn’t make a scene in front of everyone else.

I hoped she gave him hell.

Ellen Parent, mine and Natalie’s former fifth grade teacher, came over and chatted with us for a while, but I kept my ears open for sounds from the house and I picked up on very faint yelling followed by a low voice trying to soothe.

Fucking Wyatt.

My mom and dad came over and said hello and started chatting with Natalie. I was worried things would be awkward, but they’d known her since she was a little girl. She’d slept over at my house hundreds of times.

At last, Gretchen stomped out of the house and I saw her put on a fake, Miss America smile. Wyatt came after her and pasted a smile on his face too. He reached for her hand, but she ignored him.

Yikes.

Someone whistled for everyone’s attention and Gretchen stood on the steps of the house and looked out at all of us.

“Thank you so much for coming to our gender reveal party. We all feel your love and support for our little one.” She paused to put her hand on her belly. “Please have food and drinks, and the official reveal will be at two-thirty, so we’ll all gather and wait to find out if we’re having a prince or a princess!”

People cheered. Natalie and I didn’t.

Gretchen and Wyatt kissed, but you could see the visible tension between them.

“Let’s get snacks,” I said, steering Natalie toward the food.

We filled our plates and got more drinks and hung out at the bar with Esme for a little while. Gretchen had now been rescued by her friends and was laughing with a group of them. She was one of the first to have a baby, so she was soaking up the attention.

I wished Paige and Linley were there, but they weren’t invited. Gretchen had been very strict about invitations. Absolutely no crashers.

Natalie and I sat with our plates and ate watermelon and shrimp cocktail and fancy cheese.

“I’m so glad she decided not to do games,” Natalie said. “I talked her out of it.”

“Thank you for that.” We clinked our second Bellinis together. I was getting pleasantly tipsy, which was making the whole thing a lot more bearable.

By the time we actually got to the reveal part, I was on my third drink. Technically, I could walk home if I had to, so I wasn’t that worried about being sober.

The moment arrived and we all gathered on the lawn to wait for the plane to fly over. At almost exactly two-thirty, someone spotted it and the photographer clicked away as everyone realized the sign said IT’S A GIRL!!!!

Gretchen jumped on Wyatt and he caught her, but I saw the look on his face as the videographer and photographer documented the occasion.

“He’s mad,” I said to Natalie.
