“Exactly,” I said.

We stood there, our faces inches away from each other. My heart pounded so loudly, I could hear it over any other sound.
“Are you ready?” Natalie asked.
“Yes,” I said, even though I didn’t think I was.
She swallowed and put her hand on my cheek.
“Here goes,” she said, leaning just a fraction closer. I needed something to do with my hands, so I rested them on her waist. Her skin was warm under the thin fabric of shirt.
“I’m going to kiss you now,” she said.
“Okay,” I said. I could feel my lips trembling just a little bit.
The kiss wasn’t coming.
“You don’t have to,” I said, my heart sinking. Now we were here and she didn’t want to anymore.
I started to pull away, but she pulled me closer.
Natalie rested her forehead against mine.
“Just give me a second,” she whispered.
“Okay,” I said again.
I waited.
Her eyes opened.
In the space of a heartbeat, her lips were on mine. Softly, so softly. The barest brush of a touch. A hint of a kiss, a promise of something more to come.
Carefully, I pressed my mouth more firmly against hers and she inhaled through her nose in surprise, but she didn’t pull away.
Her fingers stroked my face as she started to ask for more. To reach for a deeper kiss. I followed her.
My fingers gripped onto her waist, as if I needed something to hold onto so I wouldn’t float away. Everything in my chest was light and bright and floaty.
Natalie’s lips were full and cradled mine expertly. As if she instinctively knew exactly how I liked to be kissed. How could she know?
Seeking more, I pressed myself against her, reaching for increased contact.
Natalie pulled back, gasping.
“It’s too much,” she said. She put her fingers on her lips and shook her head.
“Was it bad?” I asked, horrified by her reaction. I’d thought she was enjoying it, but I must have completely misread things.
“No! No, it wasn’t bad. Completely the opposite. I just…I got overwhelmed.” She backed away from me. “This was a really terrible idea,” she said.
