It wasn’t like you learned how to kiss in school. There were no kissing classes. You only learned by doing and by messing up and trying again. I didn’t think I was an amazing kisser, but I’d never had any complaints before.
If she hadn’t asked me to kiss her, I never would have asked her, and we wouldn’t be in this mess. So technically, this was her fault for bringing it up in the first place.
A message came in while I was making the bed with the fresh blankets and sheets. I’d also scrubbed the shower and cleaned out the entire fridge. The cabin had never been so spotless.
Can we talk?
Three simple words.
Sure I sent back.
She called me a few seconds later.
“Hey,” she said.
“Hey,” I said.
“I’m so sorry,” she said.
I got under the fresh covers and pulled them over myself.
“Are you sorry you asked me to kiss you, or sorry it happened, or both?”
“I’m sorry that I reacted like that. I just…I wasn’t expecting it, Em. I wasn’t expecting kissing you to feel like that.”
She still wasn’t being specific.
“Feel like what?” I asked.
“Feel like everything,” she said. “Em, I don’t know how to tell you this, but I want to kiss you again.”
“Oh,” I said. That wasn’t what I’d expected.
“I thought you were going to call me and tell me I was a terrible kisser,” I said.
“I would never say that, even if it was true. You’re not a terrible kisser, Em. You’re an amazing kisser. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Wow.
“So, what does this mean?” I asked. “Do you like me?”
“Of course I like you,” she said, as if that was obvious.
“Do you like me in a friend way or a different way?”
She made a frustrated sound. “I don’t know! I like you in the ways you like a person.”
“Will you stop being so vague, it’s really getting on my nerves,” I said.
“I’m sorry, this is all really confusing! All I know is that I want to kiss you again. Can we just start there?”
I thought about that.
“I guess? Okay. Because I want to kiss you again too, so we’re on the same page.”
She was silent for a moment.
“Good. It’s good to be on the same page,” she said.
