“Right,” Natalie said, pushing herself up to stand. “I have a favor to ask.”

“Is it to kiss you, because I will absolutely do that,” I said.

“No, I was hoping you could maybe teach me how to drive? I want to get my license and a car so I don’t have to rely on someone else anymore. Plus, I’ve never made out in a car.”

That was an excellent reason for Natalie to get a car.

“Absolutely. This weekend?” I asked.

“I don’t think I’m ready yet, but soon. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I don’t know who else would be willing. Gretchen, maybe, but now that she’s pregnant, she’s being extra cautious and wouldn’t want to ride with me.”

“I guess that makes sense. Doesn’t matter, because I’m happy to teach you, anytime you want. No big deal.”

Natalie had driven before, it had just been a long time. It wasn’t like it was rocket surgery, she could totally do it.

“I have full faith in you. We’ll go down one of the back roads and see how comfortable you are and then go from there. Okay?”

She nodded. “Okay.”

The drive to her parent’s house was pretty quiet. We were both lost in our own thoughts about everything that had happened tonight.

“Can you text me when you get home?” she asked, as we sat in the driveway.

“Yeah, but it’s only like a five-minute drive. Unless I hit a deer or something,” I said. It had happened before.

“It just seemed like something you’re supposed to say when you’re dating,” she said, grinning at me.

“Oh, right, that.” We were dating. “Are we telling people? About this dating thing?”

Natalie thought about that for a moment.

“I don’t have a problem with it, but be prepared to hear all kinds of opinions,” she said.

Oh, I knew my friends were going to have lots to say about this, but they loved me enough to keep their mouths shut and support me as long as I was happy.

“Yeah, I’m sure. Good thing I don’t really give a fuck what the Castleton gossip circle-jerk has to say about us.”

Natalie made a face. “That’s a lovely mental image, thanks for that.”

“You’re welcome,” I said with a smirk.

“Okay, I should go in,” she said, putting her hand on the door.

“Wait, you’re going to leave without kissing me goodbye?” I asked.

“I’m sorry. How rude of me,” she said, leaning in and slipping her tongue between my lips.

I was completely lost to anything other than Natalie’s mouth on mine until she pulled back and winked at me.

“Goodnight, Em,” she said.

I blinked like a fish for a few seconds.

“Goodnight, Nat,” I said, and she got out of the car.

I had to sit there for a minute because I forgot how to drive.
