Yeah, but heading to bed soon.

That wasn’t a lie. I did like to fall asleep before one in the morning, or else I was a mean bitch the next morning when my alarm went off.

Oh, sorry. I forget what time it is for normal people. I keep vampire hours.

She would make such a sexy vampireI thought, but didn’t send that to her.

It’s okay. I don’t mind. What’s up? I asked.

She typed something and then deleted it, then spent a long time typing something else. I had to stop staring at those little dots moving while she figured out what to send. Maybe she just got distracted by something else. It was hard to tell.

I wish you were here so I could make you a paloma instead of my millionth Jager bomb she finally sent.

Oh.

I wish I was there too. Except that would mean I’d have to put pants back on.

Shit, that was probably too much. I couldn’t seem to help myself from blurting out whatever I thought, even in texts.

Hey, you haven’t seen some of the people in here. Pants are nice, but definitely not a requirement. She sent that with a little winking emoji. I shuddered, thinking about what she must have seen before.

Should I even ask? I sent.

Her next message was a voice memo. “Probably not. I’ve seen enough butts to last a lifetime. What is it about some people deciding to take their clothes off when they get drunk? And don’t get me started on how many times people thought this was the Coyote Ugly bar and they could dance on top of it. Let’s just say I’ve had to call for an ambulance more than once.” She had to speak loudly over the noise of the bar, but it was still nice to hear her voice.

She sent a second message. “I just want to go home and not talk to anyone else for like a week, and not smile. My face gets tired of smiling.” She sighed.

You should go on a stoic vacation. Give your face and voice a week off. Run off and rent a cabin in the middle of the woods.

Honestly, that sounded amazing. If I didn’t always bring my work with me, I would have done the same thing.

“That sounds like heaven, honestly,” she said.

I closed my eyes for a minute and imagined what it would be like. I could just read and sit still and not answer emails or texts or phone calls. No meetings. No deadlines. Maybe I’d finally teach myself how to knit. Obviously, I’d bring several puzzles. I had a new one coming in a few days. The puzzle table in the corner of my living room was clear and ready to go.

“Shit, one of my regulars is talking about his ex-wife. That’s only going to lead to a lot of crying, so I need to cut him off and get him home. Have a good night, Paige.”

She should have been a therapist. I bet she would have made more money. Less debt as a bartender, though.

Oh no, that sounds like a lot. Have a good rest of your night, Esme.

And that was that. Hopefully she’d still want to talk to me tomorrow.
