“I know. I kind of hit the friend lottery, didn’t I?”

She wiped her hands on a dish towel and put her arms around me.

“I used to be your friend too, remember?” she asked.

“And what are you now?”

“I’m whatever you want me to be,” she whispered in my ear.

“Right now I want you to be naked,” I said, and she giggled.

“I think that can be arranged.”

We didn’t even make it to the bedroom. We fucked on the kitchen floor, which wasn’t very comfortable, but at least we could say we’d done it.

“We should probably get up,” I said, as we lay tangled together.

“This is so uncomfortable, but I don’t know if I can move,” Natalie said, groaning.

“Come on,” I said, slapping her ass and making her yelp. “Let’s go take a shower and get in bed.”

Natalie was taking me on our date tomorrow, and I’d been trying to get any kind of details out of her. Since I would be driving, I at least wanted to know where we were going, but she refused.

“As long as it’s not skydiving,” I said.

“Are you kidding? There is no way. I know some people think it’s empowering, or whatever, but no,” she said, shaking her head as we lay in bed together.

“I hope it involves food,” I said.

“Yes, it does,” she said. “You won’t go hungry.”

“Good. That’s all I ask.”

“Yeah, you’re not cute when you’re hangry,” she said.

“Hey!”

She laughed, and I remembered something from earlier.

“What did you want to tell me? When I asked you earlier?” I asked.

“Oh, that. I was just wondering if you ever felt weird when I talk about my ex,” she said.

I shook my head. “No, why? I talk about mine.”

“I don’t know. Just because it was pretty recent,” she said.

“No, not at all.” I sat up so I could look at her.

“Really?” she asked.

“Yeah, really. Your past led you back to Castleton. Why would I be upset about that?”

I wasn’t going to twist myself into jealousy for what she’d done when we were apart. Waste of time.

“Good,” she said, sighing happily. “I was just thinking about how nothing we do together is a first, and how I wish it was.”

“You mean like sex and dates and stuff?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

“Nat. You’re my first best friend. That means more to me than anything else. And I have you now.”

I held her tight.

“I guess you’re right,” she said.

“I am. I’m always right.”
