Since she was my ride, I had no choice but to follow her out, feeling Alivia’s eyes on me the whole time.

“She’s seriously so great. I know some brides get so stressed about wedding planning, but this has been a dream,” Linley said as we got back in her car.

“Yeah, she seems great,” I said, looking out the window.

“Hey,” Natalie said as she walked in the apartment, her arms weighed down with grocery bags. I rushed to help her.

“Thanks,” she said, setting everything down and panting a little.

“They really need to get the elevator fixed.” She clutched at her side and leaned on the counter.

I started unloading the bags and putting things away.

“I know. You should pester Chuck again,” I said.

Our landlord was a good dude, and generally on top of things, so this whole elevator situation was really unusual.

“How was work?” I asked.

Natalie had started out as a nanny for a family who had moved to Castleton last year, and had moved up to being Piper’s – the mom – personal assistant.

“Busy, but good. It’s weird not taking care of Preston anymore. I have to stop myself from going to daycare to see how he’s doing. I miss him so much.”

Natalie had gotten really close with the family, and the little boy she looked after. I’d met him plenty of times and he was just the sweetest thing.

“And how did everything go with Linley?” she asked.

“We picked a table setting,” I said. My plan had been to not tell anyone about the Alivia situation, but honestly, I couldn’t hold it in anymore.

“So, uh, remember I told you about that hookup I had before I moved here?” I asked as she started putting things out to make dinner. Most nights she was staying at her girlfriend Emerald’s place, so it was nice to have her here tonight, and she’d volunteered to cook. Looked like the menu was going to be salmon with green beans and rice.

“Yeah,” she said, washing the green beans in the sink.

“So… I found out who I hooked up with,” I said, and she looked up at me.

“Who?” she asked.

“Linley’s wedding coordinator,” I said.

Natalie dropped the colander of green beans in the sink with a clang.

“What?” she said. “Are you serious?”

“I wish I wasn’t, but yeah. It was her.”

Natalie just blinked a few times.

“What? How?”

“Exactly,” I said. “What are the chances?”

Astronomical. I wasn’t a big math person, but I bet they were in the fractions of percentages.

“Did she say anything?” Natalie asked, green beans forgotten, her hands dripping water on the kitchen rug.

“I mean, not really. She didn’t say anything to Linley, and I didn’t tell her. I’ve only told you, and I’d kind of like to keep it that way.” I wasn’t embarrassed at all, it was just weird. My whole plan had been to hook up with a sexy stranger and then never see them again.
