The babies were gangly, as if they didn’t quite know how to use their legs yet.

Neither of us spoke until the deer family was gone.

“Thanks for walking with me,” I said. “I hope I didn’t ruin your workout plans.”

“You didn’t ruin anything,” Alivia said.

“Good,” I said.

We walked in silence, but it wasn’t uncomfortable.

At last, the facade of my apartment building emerged through the trees.

“Do you want a ride back to the inn?” I asked her.

“No, I’m going to run back. Thanks, though.”

So much running. I almost asked her if she was running from something.

Instead, I stood with her on the edge of the trail where the dirt met the pavement.

“I guess I’ll see you later?” I asked.

“We have the walkthrough this weekend,” she reminded me. Oh, right. I’d forgotten about that.

The inn had a wedding this weekend, and we were doing a walkthrough to see the setup and so Linley could make any tweaks she wanted to and get the setup she wanted for her own wedding mapped out. Gray was coming, but she’d asked me to come and help her keep track of everything and take notes. I wasn’t her maid of honor (she hadn’t wanted to do anything like that), but I was filling some of those roles. I mean, I’d volunteered. Paige was doing some of the other MoH duties, so it all worked out.

“See you then,” I said, and she gave me a smile before turning and bounding back into the woods.

I watched her run until she was out of sight.

I didn’t have any other run-ins with Alivia the rest of the week, but I was a little on edge about seeing her on Saturday morning.

Linley drove and I sat in the back.

“I can’t wait for you to see everything,” Linley said, nearly bouncing in her seat.

“I know it’s going to be perfect,” Gray said.

“You’re going to love it,” Linley said as we pulled into the lot next to the inn.

There were garlands of white and purple flowers draped over the railing on the porch and hanging from the roof.

“So, ours will be the rose gold and blue, with the dark green ribbon,” Linley explained.

The sign out front proclaimed that the wedding was for Annabelle and Todd in curly lettering.

“Ours will look better,” Linley said.

“I know,” Gray said, taking her hand and kissing the back of it.

I trailed behind them up the stairs with a notebook in hand, ready to write down anything that Linley asked me to.

Alivia descended the stairs, as she had the other times I’d been here. Today she wore a gray suit with a blue shirt. I loved the way she looked in everything.

I forgot what I was doing here for a few seconds.
