It was a lovely picture.

“I’ll think about it,” she said. “I should probably get going.”

I wanted to ask her to stay, but I also didn’t want to force her to accept my company. It had been a long day, and Alivia impressed me as the kind of person who needed to decompress after being around a lot of people.

“Sure, I’ll drive you,” I said. What had gone wrong? Had things gotten too personal again?

She took both our bowls to the sink and rinsed them out before adding them to the dishwasher.

There was distance between us in the car as I drove, and I didn’t like it. I wanted her to flirt with me again. I wanted her to look at me with desire in her eyes.

“Thanks for dinner and for inviting me today. Your friends are really great people. I don’t know if I would have hung out with them on my own,” she said, turning to face me in the passenger seat.

I gripped the steering wheel. “You’re welcome. Honestly, you can come anytime. I’ll let you know when we’re hanging out as a group again.”

“Yeah, that would be great.”

“Oh,” I said, remembering. “I realized that I don’t have your number.”

She took my phone and put her number in, and then sent herself a message from my phone.

“There you go.” Our fingers brushed as she handed the phone back to me.

“Thanks,” I said, and she started to get out of the car.

“Wait,” I said. She sat back down and looked at me expectantly. “Sorry, it’s late.” I shook my head.

“Is there something you want?” Alivia asked.

Yes. Her. I wanted to go back to my place and get her naked, but I’d literally just said that I wanted to keep that space between us.

“No, it’s fine,” I said.

“See you later,” she said with a tight smile. I hated her leaving like this, but there wasn’t much I could do about it but watch her walk up the porch and disappear inside the inn.
