“I had a really good time last night,” she said, her fingers stroking up and down my legs.

“Me too,” I said.

“I know you have some reservations about relationships, and you don’t want to get into anything serious, and I respect that. But I’d really like to keep doing what we’re doing, if you’re up for it,” she said.

I chewed on my lip. I wasn’t expecting to talk about this pre-lasagna.

“Can I think about it?” I asked.

“Absolutely,” she said, kissing the tip of my nose. “Let’s eat.”

The flowers made the perfect centerpiece on the table and the candles set a romantic mood.

“This is perfect,” Alivia said after her first bite.

“Is it? I was hoping it would be the way you like it.” I breathed a sigh of relief.

“I have to be honest with you, I’d tell you it was good even if it tasted like garbage.”

I made a shocked sound and smacked her arm.

“So you’re lying to me.”

“I don’t have to,” she said, cutting another bite with her fork.

“You don’t have to lie to me about stuff like that. If my food sucks, just tell me. I’m not that fragile, Alivia.”

She glanced up from her plate.

“I know I don’t. But sometimes we lie because it’s a reflex. I promise not to lie to you about your lasagna, how’s that?” she said.

“Deal,” I said, picking up my glass and tapping it against hers.

“It is really good,” she said after another bite.

“I appreciate your honesty,” I said.

Alivia had seconds of the lasagna and then put her hands on her belly.

“I’m probably going to regret eating that much but, right now, I don’t care.”

We both cleared the plates, rinsed them, and put them in the dishwasher as I got out some ice cream, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

“Tell me when,” I told Alivia as I poured sprinkles on her bowl of ice cream.

I poured for a long time, until the ice cream had completely disappeared under the little rainbow sprinkles.

“When,” she said with a grin.

“Alivia likes extra sprinkles. Noted,” I said out loud.

“They’re crunchy,” she said, taking both our bowls to the couch.

“We’ll have to get you one of the sundaes from the ice cream truck,” I said. “They’re completely over the top and no one can finish them, but they’re made to share.”
