Martha bustled into the kitchen to ask if she could help with anything.
“No, we’re great, thank you though,” Natalie said. All of the desserts had come from Sweet’s, and I’d seen Martha rearranging them with tongs out in the living room.
“How are my girls?” she asked, putting one arm around me and one around Alivia.
“Hungry,” I said.
“Same,” Alivia said. Martha had absorbed Alivia right into the fold of the Sweet family, and Alivia didn’t seem to mind.
“Well, let’s do something about that,” she said, pushing us toward the living room where there was only room to stand.
I recognized just about everyone in the room, except for one person I didn’t think I’d seen before.
“Who’s that?” I asked Alivia, motioning to the mystery woman with my chin. She had straight blonde hair that fell on either side of her face, dark blue pants, and a soft white sweater. Very pretty, and definitely out of place. Her clothes had that expensive look about them, and she had an air of…something I couldn’t put my finger on.
“I don’t know,” Alivia said, shrugging at me. “She looks kind of familiar, but I don’t know where from.”
“Jax,” Sasha said. She stood next to me with a plate of food that she wasn’t eating.
“Sorry?” I asked.
“Jax. Her name is Jaqueline.” Sasha didn’t sound happy about knowing this information.
“Oh, you know her?”I asked.
Sasha’s face went red and she seemed to realize that she’d spoken the mystery woman’s name aloud.
“Never mind,” she said. “I’m going to get a drink.” With that, she was gone.
“You think there’s a story there?” I asked Alivia.
“Oh, definitely,” she agreed.
Em and Natalie stood up and thanked everyone for coming, and for all the support. I got a little teary eyed and had to pretend that I wasn’t wiping the emotion from my eyes.
“You’re so cute,” Alivia said.
“Shut up,” I said, sniffing. “I can’t help it. I’m happy for my friends.”
“I love that about you,” she said, putting her arms around me and kissing my forehead.
“I love everything about you,” I said. “So take that.”
She smiled down at me. “I will. I’ll take all of you.”
